Title: Registration Numbers

My dad just bought a boat and he has registered it in NJ and the registration numbers he was supplied are as follows - STN04 2056M7 9H

That looks like too long of a number to put on the side of the boat - Am I missing something? 

Is he supposed to just use these last in the sequence? 2056M7 9H?

That looks more like a hull identification number, same as the vehilcle identification number on your car.

If it is, it would equate to a Silverton built in March, 1979 according to the code.

I do not know how they assign documentation numbers but I do believe that is from the feds.

Your registration numbers should be 'NJ' followed by four numbers followed by two letters.
That is the numbers that you see on the bow of most boats.

Oh yeah, if it is the HIN, there is one too many digits.

Yea..  don't be sticking that on the boat..  Think you are looking at the wrong set of Numbers..

If the boat was registered in NJ by the previous owner I think they keep the same numbers.

That is correct. The numbers stay with the boat.

Thanks fella's that makes sense.  And yes those number do correspond to the make and year.

Make sure your Reg. #'s are spaced apart as required. I see so many boats with #'s applied like this: NJ1234AB. Illegal and unreadable to the Marine Police and CG.It should be NJ 1234 AB.  I had a few to many numbers and letters on my first boat back in the 80's and it drew the attention of a nearby Marine Police unit. I think it was 2 or 3 tickets I got after checking the whole boat out. As stated above, the current Registration numbers stay with the boat. Matt

that is definately the boats hull identification numbers (HIN)
The first 3 letters of that number is to identify the boat builder in the united states.
the nj registration may be on the title because this number never changes as does a motor vehicle.
