Hi SPEEDRUG,

Sounds good to me.  How about by the fishtank.  I think that will still be there.  If not pick a spot.  I will be wearing my NJSWF hat and shirt.

Will you be walking the beach or taking a buggy onto the sand?

I my self with my wife will be taking the buggy onto the beach and heading down the beach.  I will probably be using mostly large plugs to start if no action switching to smaller plugs and as a last resort clams.

I hope it is a nice day.

Happy Catching

I'll be out there too. Driving my truck as always.  MY starting location is still in the process of being determined. Fishing the park  during the week should help . It gets to be a madhouse out there during the tournament, the beach gets more crowded then a party boat.  :'( <'((((><
I've spent most of my life fishing, the rest I've just wasted     <'((((><

This is true.  If I frustrated I will just put on my reporter hat and take pictures or even a video.  I'll see...

But for now I plan on fishing elbow to elbow with whom ever.  I only hope they are good sportsmen at it.

I might be doing the surf thing in November after the boat comes out of the water.  I usually go to Ibsp, but don't take the truck on the beach.  I usually fish the very last block before beach truck access.  Is there any particular place to fish off that beach, or is it all hit or miss this time of year.  I am not the surf fisherman, but when the boat comes out, I don't have many other alternatives.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

When surf casting and using plugs..how do you rig it up to have a good cast?

Hi SPEEDRUG,

I usually tie right to the plug.  I find it gives the plug better movement and does not weigh the plug down, but now they have swiveled clasps that are small and very strong so you can go either way.  But like in my case old habits take a long time for change to take place.  I just changed over this year to all braid after everyone (almost everyone) pushed me in that direction and I am glad I did.  What a difference.

Good Luck

I thought you would have to put weight on to get a good cast...

Hi SPEEDRUG,

By putting a weight on a plug will really mess up the top water action.  The plugs come in different weights.  I like the 2oz class and up.  Some plugs even go up to 6oz.  By using braid I can cast using a 7'6" rod to 8' rod out just short of the outer bar which I never do anyway.  Most of the time the fish are in the suds or in the slough closer to the cuts, any way.

actually, you don't need weight for distance, just a good reel, long rod, and power pro...

I don't use those ultra long rods myself.  I have found that most of the fish action are in the slough between the outer bar and the beach.  If I cast 75 to 100 yards with the equipment I mentioned above you will be in the zone of catching.

I like to fish the rips as well, by fishing either side you should pick something up if they are there.

The beaches up here (north of Holgate are not the same as say down south.  the under water structure ie; sand bars are closer to the shore line where as in Ocracoke Island  and places south the beach runs flat forever like in the Wildwood area.  Where you need long rods to get out super far.

That is my strategy for Sunday.  I will be using circle hooks 6/0 to 8/0 with clams and or bunker chunks.

If the day is nice and sunny the red and white pencil poppers are deadly this time of year 2oz to 4oz will work.

White pearl color with a red mouth is also deadly.  If the day is cloudy go to a yellow and red color. If it is deep overcast try a white belly and dark color top like purple or black.

Plus these:

Paul, Fantastic choice on the plugs. The rules of the tournament allow you to fish with two rods, so that is also my way to fish it. One for plugs, one for bait. If I get tired or lazy, it will be two for bait. Good Luck to everyone who fishes the tounrament. <'((((><

I hear two for bait.  This is going to be a long weekend for me.

Competition Sat night and Tourny Sunday morning.

I hope I can last.

Nice thing about bait is you can put the pole in a holder and sit in a chair , But you WILL catch more fish by actually holding the pole. Good Luck Paul. <'((((>< t^
