Fat Alberts on the Queen Mary 9/30/11 (Pics & Video added)
« on: September 30, 2011, 08:01:55 PM »
After reading the terrible report from this past Wednesday's Cock Robin trip, I almost changed my mind and didn't go out today.  Just as I was contemplating that, Darren (Fishin Dude) called me and said he wanted to go.  So, I decided to give it a shot.

It was a nice surprise to see my friend, Chuck, show up.  TT^  Chuck used to work with me a number of years ago.  The last time I saw him was about two years back.  Oddly enough, it was under similar circumstances.  Except the last time it was a winter flounder boat trip that we ran into each other.

Anyway, the ocean was a little snotty as we left the inlet.  We took a long hour and a half to two hour ride and finally arrived at our first spot.  I hate to say it, but for about the first 90% of the trip, I thought that maybe I should have stayed in bed.  There had been a number of bluefish caught and maybe a half a dozen albies.  I tried various metals and plastics (as did Darren) without any interest from the Little Tunnies.  Darren tried baiting them, and caught some nice sized bluefish, but none of the species we were after.

Finally, it got close to that 3 toot time.  The captain said, "OK guys.  Give me a reason to stay." Then, out of nowhere, it turned on!  The albies arrived and started taking baits in the slick.  Suddenly there were two, three and four rods doubled over at once, with drags singing that oh so sweet song! ;D

Final tally for us was four each of the little speedsters.  We caught our fish on both metal and soft plastics.  Not a banner day, but that flurry at the end made the trip worthwhile.  Gotta love those zippy fish! clp

I have to give a lot of credit to the captain and crew who worked extremely hard to find these fish today.  And double credit for staying out two hours past our time so we could enjoy these newly found fish. slt

I'm glad Darren convinced me to get out there today.  I had a great time!  Thanks buddy. t^

By the way, as we were leaving, we saw two guys getting into a red Colorado pickup truck with a new school "NJ Saltwater Fisherman" on the back window.  So, if you guys are reading this, let us know who you are.  And next time introduce yourselves.  It would have been nice to know we were fishing amongst some fellow NJSWFers! ;D

And one last thing.  I brought along my old camera today, and though I got a couple of pictures, but it turns out the camera was on "video" mode.  So, I have no pics to post. :-\

Good job Bucktail. Did you get the numbers for us?  ;D

First place (where we got mostly bluefish) was the place I told you about the other day.  I didn't get the name of the place where we got most of the albies today. fcp

Sorry Bill. After rereading that first line I can see where my meaning could have been misconstrued.  What I should have said was, "After reading about the lack of alby action from this past Wednesday's Cock Robin trip, I almost changed my mind and didn't go out today."

You are correct.  You guys didn't have a "terrible report" as I wrote.  It looks like you actually caught a bunch of fish that day, and a great variety too!  clp

My focus was strictly on the false albacore, as I am addicted to them! ;D

And I'm sure if anybody was going to catch them that day it would have been the great crew of the Cock Robin.  slt

I should have made that first line more clear, and for that I apologize. t^
