Title: Winter Flounder, looks like new regs coming
Post by: IrishAyes on March 07, 2014, 05:06:21 PM
March 1 to Dec 31. Should find out shortly. Also says summer flounder regs should be announced April 3.

I wish they would just open it up year round.  With a two fish limit, those two months won't hurt the stock.

I used to fish for them in the snow in January and February off the old railroad bridge in Oyster Creek.  It sure helped alleviate the cabin fever when there was nothing else to fish for.

Wish they would add to the bag limit as well...still miss that fishery...

You can't eat much with 2 fish.  We get them while Clamming Stripers. We add an unattended light rod in a rod holder with a clam strip and get a few flatties.  Targeting them specifically is not really worth it.  I have memories of the 70's with old timers with a 15' stick with a plunger on the end pounding the sea floor to release worms etc, to draw them in. Chum pots filled with corn and dog food worked too. I'm not sure if they were even regulated then. Many fish were caught though. I'm curious to know why the limit is so low.

I catch them occasionally during the summer and fall on some of my deep water numbers while bottom fishing. Its going to be nice to put them in the box and add viriaty to the dinner table.

Sorry to be negative but this part of the article "Some suspicious minds believe that the extended winter flounder season was an attempt to mollify New Jersey anglers angered by the imposition of regional summer flounder measures on New Jersey." seems fishy.   5hrug

I'll buy that. I don't want t get into the politics of the regional thing, a lot of guys are mad at New York. You might be surprised, some of your donation money to a certain group for good fishing causes, actually worked against NJ Fisherman on this one.
