I am in the same boat. Some have told me that Okuma isn't a bad entry level reel for inshore trolling. I am considering picking up a 4 pack rod/reel combo at http://www.ebay.com/itm/OKUMA-TROLLING-COMBO-CPDR-86M-MA30D-ROD-REEL-4-PACK-/400266451961?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d31bd5bf9
For the price and limited trolling I might do this year I think this will be a good start before investing way too much money.

I wouldn't use that setup for inshore tuna. Looks too light.

whs I think those Okuma Classics would blow up or seize on the first good run.

penn senator combos end of story ;D

rdent5 first question troll, jig, bait fishing don't think is only small fish in close you can get some rods and reels to double duty.I'm a Avet guy i think you can get away with single speed JX reels loaded with 65lb braid and jigging rods you can use the for bait, jigging and trolling yes trolling if you don't mind trolling with braid, buy the best you can it pays of in the long run.
as far as the okuma combos have level winds on them will not hold up to the fast runs of tuna.

All the responses above are helpful,Personally I would listen to Capt.Rich, He knows his stuff and has plenty of experience. t^ What month do you plan on catching inshore Tuna? And what areas?

I would listen to Capt.Rich, He knows his stuff.. t^ What month do you plan on catching inshore Tuna? And what areas?
..Now that's the million dollar question t^

honestly i dont know im green with tuna i have never gone tuna fishing on my own boat before just looking to get as much info as possible
i planned on getting some set ups for jigging and trolling if i can get away with one that does double that would be great

Rd... I am in the same boat and started a similar thread a while ago. Maybe you can find it if you search for it or maybe Rod can post a link.
I got a lot of useful info from the guys about the same questions. Which port do you plan on fishing from? I will be out of Manasquan this year if you're nearby maybe we can try things out together.

im docked in sea bright but if we are going to head out for the same thing and we can meet up on the water two boats are better then one and safer as well or plan something to go together let me know

Sounds good! I plan on making trips to the Mud Hole this year for the first time so another boat would be welcomed.

Good idea guys,, September is a good time to try for tuna within the range of smaller vessels. But keep looking for posts from members on this sight for info on where they might be.

sounds good to me is anything running out there in april may????
-
RD: I don't know what might be running in April, if anything (maybe blues as bait begins to come back to life?) but, I have been reading a ton of archived posts on here about the Mud Hole, Arundo, Monster Ledge, etc. I load-up with just a little bit more info each time.
I have found the biggest help to be where these sites are and that there probably isn't any exact coordinate versus just an "area". I have already put this in my planning software and began looking at the fishing charts. Hope to catch you out there soon.

" The Million Dollar question" of Where are they? at any given time is really public knowledge.. Always referred to as the ever changing "Tuna Grounds" The main issue is knowing how to fish for them.. once you get there. what they are biting on.. and what techniques are producing.. This is also somewhat shared over the radio in most cases to everyone on the grounds..
Color spreader Bars. speed.. for jigging. there is types of jigs .. slow retrieve or fast retrieve.. Color is a big factor in every case. sometimes you will just have to experiment. and find what's working. just like any other fishing t^
But always be prepared to come and say. "that was a nice boat ride" ;D For me.. the adventure is fun just by it's self t^

ok thanks for all the info guys
