Shrewsbury/Navesink Crabbing plan with the kids
« on: August 04, 2010, 06:36:01 PM »
With all the good reports of crabbing this year, I'm thinking about taking my young kids up the river with my boat and doing some hardcore blueclaw crabbing.

Only thing is, I've never been fishing or crabbing up there so it'll be a prospect trip.  Can you guys help with a few pointers to get me and the kids on some crab?  Anything without spot burning would be helpful.  Is it better upriver from the highlands bridge?  Does tide matter at all?  Is it better to anchor on the edge of the river in the shallow slower moving water or is it good to hit the deeper spots at slack?  What's a good water depth range to be in?  Any shallow water dangers aside from the obvious?

Thanks for any tips you can offer!

Fishing Sandy Hook and anywhere I can get on a boat.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife sells all of my fishing tackle for what she thinks I paid for it!

I thought the DEP said we cannot or at least should not eat crabs or shellfish out of the rivers and Raritan Bay due to high levels of crap in them this season.
Did I get that wrong cause that is what I was told and have not gone this season for that reason?
