Title: Liberty State Park 5/15
Post by: Drew806 on May 17, 2009, 11:01:22 PM
Didn't make it to the shore as planned and ended up going back to Liberty State Park. Went to Moe's in Jersey City for some bunker and got to the park around 8:00am. After 3 hours of incoming tide not a bite. Then the blues started to attack. Caught a few from 20-25inched all released. About 20min before leaving the spool started feeding out line and locked the baitrunner. Knew i had a decent size fish and after about 5min of reeling in i see the stripes we like to see. Thought i had my first keeper landed only to measure it and come up 1/2 inch short and released.  :'(  They are there though and the blues where being caught nonstop by others all on bunker.

Drew I hate to tell ya but that might of been a keeper.  On stripers you can close the tail which sometimes adds that 1/2 an inch.  Just an fyi.

Good going anyway.  You got the skunk off ya for the season.  t^ grtn

Yeah the best way to measure a bass if to close its mouth and with its nose up against a flat surface pinch its tail closed and then with the tape measure under the fish and not over the body, take your measurement.

For the tournaments I have judged this was the norm.

Good Luck... t^

the NJ fish and wildlife mag to make it easier to understand,,
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/2009/digmar11-19.pdf

mouth closed and tail squeezed. also run the tape how ped said to, or straight down the side.

the f&g guys aint gonna care about any excuses when they are checking people out.

we always play it safe by only keeping fish that are at least 1/2-1" over limit, gives us a little buffer, and a piece of mind

If the Striper sticks its tongue out it can add a half inch. :P :P

It's smart to use a real ruler as you did as many of the rulers on top of coolers are not accurate.
