Title: Fog, Friends and Fat Albert..10/6
Post by: Treebeard on October 07, 2007, 05:39:28 PM
Had wanted to take our maiden Mudhole voyage in the new boat, but with the heavy fog,  and us still being somewhat green with the boat and using the radar, we chickened out..Instead, we left Keansburg at about 8am and headed across the bay toward Breezy Pt. to check out the reports of False Albacore. Started trolling Clark Spoons and feathers by 9 at the point and headed east dodging targets on the radar.. About 20 minutes later, the lightest outfit in the spread started shrieking, and by the time we got the other rods cleared the fish had the Abu 6500 about empty! Our friend Dennis cranked his elbow off and gained it all back and decked our first Little Tunny of the day..By Bro' was delighted as these where his first fish in the tuna family and he was amazed at their speed.. I had hoped to troll until I found a concentration or saw surface action, and then cast or chunk, but that never developed..Trolled for a few hours, landed 6 Albies and a couple blues and dropped a few others. All came on spoons behind 4-5 oz drails at about 6.5 mph. After the fog cleared we headed over to the Mud Buoy, as I had a little bunker chum left from last week.. Fished there for a couple hours, but the bite was slow, and we only chunked up 3 more 8-10lb blues before calling it a day.

Good job.  Nice catch.

Don't forget to use that radar on good days so you will know what things should look like on the bad days when you need it.

Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey...

Good advice on the radar.

I see they now have FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red) for small craft.  Did not see the price but that has got to be the coolest thing since metal hooks were invented.

Happy Catching

Several thousand dollars for the cheapest ones.  They have them on some of the state police and national guard helos.  I have seen them in operation when I went up a few times for a couple of jobs at work when I was in the narcotic unit.  They are a great devise.

Hi Guys,

Try this on for size.  The sensor is about as big as a conventional reel.

Thanks guys! Great advice on the radar cap'n.. While I have used it a bit in clear weather..this was the first time i had to rely on it..The FLIR sure looks cool..I'm betting it will become  more common on boats in  the coming years as technology marches on and they become more affordable.
