From East Brunswick you can be pretty much anywhere from Sandy Hook to IBSP within an hour.
The bite is on bait right now, particularly clams.
Pick any stretch of sand, look for a hole or cut, soak the bait and be patient.

Patience, patience, and more patience is what is needed when ever you first start surf fishing. It is just like hunting for the first time. You might get lucky but very doubtful you will be cleaning anything to bring home.
Unlike boat fishing especially with all the electronics you have to rely on the ability ti read the surf and klnow where the cuts and holes are. Tides are not as important but by knowing the tides you will know weather to fish the inside or outside the cut.
Plus if I tell you where the fish are today that does not mean they will be there tomorrow. The best thing is to read, talk and most of all fish often to get the feel of the beach.
Like Chris said you are within the hour drive of Sandy Hook and Island Beach State Park where there are easy walk on areas from just about any parking lot.
Seaside Park is doing pretty well as things are off to a pretty good start this spring.
Happy Catching

Being in east brunswick don't over look Raritan bay either. You are 20 minutes from some productive spots ;)

yea man ive pulled some stripers out of the raritan at the damn at the end of route 18 by the hilton towers, and there is a brackish water river that comes off of the raritan the runs by my house (a 10 min walk from my home) and there is nice size striper in there, as well as blue fish. im just a newbie when it comes to "surf fishing". but greatly appreciate the tip.

from east brunswick, there are a lot of places you can get to within an hour. trust me, i know. i make the same trek. as stated before, you can reach anywhere from raritan bay down to IBSP. there is plenty of sand that is quiet at this time of year. sometimes its better to be someplace where no one else is. dont forget patience. i am bad with that myself, especially if i am out there fishing alone. let us know how you did.
