Title: mudhole
Post by: workingdog on August 05, 2012, 06:34:22 PM
Hey all, i'm new in the saltwater fishing and boating. I just got a boat and was thinking of making a run to the mudhole. I have charts to know the distance from the manasquan inlet to the mudhole but they are on the boat and this computer wont open up the charts. Does anyone know how far the mudhole is from the inlet? When i purchased my boat 3 weeks ago we transported it from cape may to brick and it ran out of gas just after the inlet. I'm thinking it was 95miles without using the reserve tank. That was cruising at 3,500-3,600 rpm maybe 22nts. Is that enough to get there, fish and get back?

Manasquan to the Arundo wreck is 19m

23m to the ron stoll wreck

46m to middle of the glory hole

40m to the resor wreck

Nice ride you picked up.

Gas or diesel? does it have fuel management gauges?

Need to figure out your burn rate to make a educated guess on distances, but the 1/3 rule never fails,,,, use 1/3 going out 1/3 to get back in with 1/3 left for reserve incase it turns for the worse out there.

Also your 95 miles seems like a good number for cm to mi, if you drove straight, which i'm pretty sure nobody can do, so i'd add aleast another 10-15 for that.

 what size fuel tanks?

Thanks for the compliments on my boat everyone   TT^ It is a big boat for first timer but when i saw it i had to have it plus i got it for a really good deal.  It holds 270 gallons. Gasoline. I do have to get the gas gages to read. They aren't reading. Thats the scary part. But when i go i'll fill up at the inlet. Thanks for the mileage. I figured around 30miles. We hired a captain to help with the transport. I've never driven a boat in the ocean and it was a great experience. I learned so much on that trip.  Some nice sights too. Saw a big sea turtle, dolphin and schools of fish. It was cool.

Maybe you should have a buddy boat with you on your first by yourself trip. It couldnt hurt

Amazing first boat. You may want to take a couple of shorter trips first. Just sayin'.

Good Luck with your boat. I've been boating since I was 10 year old. I have 40 plus years on the water. I would do local runs with the boat until you feel confortable. Making a mud hole trip with out knowing the boat is not recommended. Do you have safety equipment? Epirb? life raft? Just be careful, you have to expect the unexpected. Good luck and be safe.

You might want to install a fuel flow meter because analog gas gauges on boats fail often and lose accuracy. Also a good idea to sign up for Towboat US, or Seatow    They are cheap and could save your life

i'm thinking of doing to mud run in september. Weathers been to crazy lately. In the meantime i will do runs to axel reef and seagirt reef. They are close. I do have Boat U.S. I am going to get a dingy in a few weeks. Can afford one of those real expensive ones but i did see one for $400 but then i need to get a motor for it. Boating adds up, one step at a time  ::)

Nice starter boat. But when you start that size you cost increase by 3 at least.

You should NOT go any further....my gas guages work perfectly...we should swap out boats and leave all the risk in my court.

Yes kenney and 32' Luhrs. She's awesome. I do have to say my first experience with boating so far has been excellent. I'm very lucky from what i hear. Actually where i'm keeping her right now there are 3 other 32' Luhrs in the same line of slips so they were very helpful in showing me the boat  ;D

Are you at Manasquan River Club along the bulkhead by the pool/ramp? I know of 2 Luhrs there.

They all are. I originally went there and got a price, went on the other side of the canal and got a price $1k less. On my way to pay for that slip stopped at MRC and told them point blank I wanted to there but couldn't afford it and was on my way to the other place to pay for it. They matched the other place. I save on the extra mileage to the ocean and the headache of running the canal.

thats cool they worked with you and matched it. Will they keep it for the following year or go back to original price?

Don't know for sure but, I'm sure if I'm willing to pay in November they'll certainly consider it. There's also some houses on Riverside Drive that have dock/slip space.

i looked on craigslist for private slips. Couldn't find any. I know sometimes people would post them on there.

I found the best way is to keep a log on the boat.   Each time you fill up, mark down the hours on the gauges, the hours since the last time you filled up, and a general description of how you ran in since the last fill up.  After a few fuel ups, you can get an accurate picture of your burn rate.   I never trust fuel gauges in a boat.
