Upper New York Bay 8-25-13 SHARK!!!

Okay so it was just a dogfish but writing shark in the title is sure to draw more people to open this thread. Fished from 11:30 til 2:30 and around noon my rod bends over. I start fighting the fish and immediately know this isn't a bluefish based on the way it was fighting. Next logical thing that pops in my head is big striper. After about a 5 minute fight I get the fish close but it's glued to the bottom. Finally after a few minutes it surfaces and to my surprise its a large dogfish. Didn't get a good measurement on it but I'd estimate it at almost 3 1/2 or 4 feet. Nothing happening for me for the next 2 hours. A guy about 30 feet from me was using sandworms and catching small spots. He cut one up and chunked it. He leans the rod on the rail and walks away from it. A few minutes later I hear him yelling and see the rod butt in the water swimming away. I couldn't help but laugh.

Thanks for the report.  That had to be so funny to watch his rod and reel swimming away. It is amazing how fish know you are not paying attention. I have lost count of the number of hits I have gotten and missed when I turn my head to look at something else on the boat.   rgmn fcp
