I need to know what you guys think with what kind od of fish I hooked..I was fluking near great kills when I hooked some kind of fish that ran like no other fish I hooked. My drag was hardly on and that fish almost took all my line out when we decided to turn the engines on and try to catch up to it.. We must have let the tension off when the fish got off. I knew we got have done things different but in the heat of the moment that's what pop into everyones head...What kind of fish do you think we hooked....
PS..I had about a 25pd test line on it and use squid & killies combo on it..

Hi Speedrug,
Welcome to the site.
Were the bunker around ... maybe a thresher shark or nice striper ???
I always hate when I can't see the fish ...

this time of year... A large cow nose ray
-
Yup, could be a ray, However, I have yet to see one this year. Doesn't mean they are not there though.

Nesse TT^

Cownose would be my guess. I haven't heard much about them lately but it's the right time of year and the right place.
-
Yeah, those rays are very big, and MOST fish can at least be turned a couple times before they spool you, those Rays will just draw a straight line to NY and not stop, shake, or turn... Might as well hook into a dolphin.... lol

Inside near Great Kills.. Cow nose rays have been spot since the schools of peanuts came in in masses!
-
Hi Joe,
They are cool to fight ...
Cow nose it most likely was!

yeah, last had friend joking around catching fluke and blues on a trout ultra light.. 4lb test.. Well, 3hrs later and 11miles, was a 80lb cow nose..
looking for the pick!!.. We thought he had a huge striper!!

Wifey had a squid/killie combo on a hi-lo off the hook last wk and hooked a 4ft shark near/at bottom in 40ft of water. I too keep the drags lo and a keen eye on the poles-- this badboy decided to run after a bit of reeling and I thought he was gonna run the spool off.. wifey's arms were gettin tired so she handed the pole to me. Big A$$ mouth on the sucka but tiny teeth... my friend's daughter asked that it NOT be brought in the boat... sounds like the fight you had....
-
Sounds to me like a false albacore. I caught two last year and the fight is incredible.
-
At this time of the year there are any number of fish that will pick up your line and run like a locomotive. No telling what it was if it's unseen.
But always gets the heart thumping. t^

it was a blueclaw ;D

one of the reasons we love to fish, eh?
