Upper New York Bay 9-1-13 This is why we don't litter
« on: September 01, 2013, 07:36:58 PM »
Fished for snappers for about an hour and a half tonight. Had plenty follow my lures and hooked up with one only to lose it. I did catch one striper though. It hit my lure in an odd area where I was fishing that was extremely calm and shallow. The first thing I noticed is how big the striper was compared to the fish and animals I usually see there and how out of place it seemed. Next, I'm ready for it to put up a good fight and I get a little nervous that I might lose this fish on my super light tackle without a working drag and 2# test that has been on the reel since the 90's. To my surprise the fish doesn't fight at all and comes in very peacefully. While still in the water I notice something on its side, I think its some kind of parasite. As I'm thinking of how to pull this fish up without breaking my line, I notice its a plastic ring. I lip the fish and bring it up. Quickly unhook it and pull the plastic ring off of the fish. I really hope this fish makes it. It didn't put up much of a fight and seemed weak and out of place but swam off nicely. Just a reminder to put waste in its place.

Nice report and great job on releasing that striper after taking the ring off it.   t^ clp I am positive you will be rewarded with some good karma for your kindness and caring nature. I have seen fluke with missing tails and big bites in the sides from bluefish, and they survived.  Hopefully that will happen with that striper.

 t^ Nice job Rat
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Other than the marks from the ring that fish looked very healthy. Great job and awesome example of what we do to the environment.

Kudos on getting that thing off of it. Some people don't understand how throwing anything in the water is hurtful. I hope it makes it and those areas heal up.
