23Aug Barnegat Ridge
« on: August 23, 2012, 06:11:20 PM »
Made the solo run out to the ridge today.

0dark30 wake up. Loaded up with peanuts at the dock and pulled out.

Hit up the Barnegat yellow bouy, and managed one mahi. there was more there, but ran into technical difficulty's. My little 3/8oz buck tails hook straightened out a wee bit, and upon me trying to put it back, the hook snapped.

Threw my back up little bucktail on and got a bluerunner?? i think they are. Well, he straightened the hook out abit too. Threw a mini ronz on and wasn't touched.

Set off to chunk. Found a nice spot with some bait around and drifted 1.5 miles in 4 hours time.  Drift was perfect, could not ask for more.

Managed two hits, not even run offs. After some more time, went on the troll for some bonito's.

Basically trolled form the edge of the ridge to the lillian and back again, circling plenty of bait on the surface along the way for no hits or knockdowns. Did manage to mark some sporadic bait, and fish.

Trolled a clark spoon with a drail to get it down, my mahi feathers chain, and a rainbow spreader bar for good measure.

Headed back in to still perfect sea conditions, making one more stop at the mahi bouy.

Upon arriving at the bouy, had to be a four foot wahoo came right up to the back of the boat, threw a ronz at him and he didn't go for it, just swam away.

There was some bait around the pot, so tried jigging and tossing the some what bent bucktail some more for no hits.

All in all not a bad day. Very peaceful out there on a solo run, i can tell ya that much.

 Blue Runner???

Nice trip Greg. t^  Those smaller size Spros have those thin wire hooks on them.  Might have to beef up a little for the next trip.

Black spot on gill cover and blue base on the pectoral fins...looks like a blue runner to me... and a large one at that judging by the size of the gulp package. It's member of the jack family like amberjacks. We used to catch little ones in Florida all the time. Put up one hell of a fight on light tackle. Pound for pound they'll make bluefish look like pussy cats minus the menacing teeth

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.
