Trollin bass 10/27
« on: October 27, 2008, 06:19:09 PM »
Left port at first light this morning searching the bay for bird activity from SH along Keansburg, Keyport, Triangle, and along Staten Island. Found a good size flock resting on the water with limited movement.  Casted shads (newly purchased pearls), crippled herrings for over an hour.  There were very few marks in this location and thought maybe some blind casts and I'd get lucky.  No takers.  Weather was spectacular out there all morning.

Began marking plenty of fish in the Reach and again none were interested in my jigging or modified retrieves slow, fast, twitch, side to side.  It didn't matter.   Since I had no bait I figured I'd change things up with a slow troll and make my way back up toward port.  Very frustrating with all those marks scattering the FF.

Set up two of my Shimano Talaveras with 9er's shad umbrella rigs and began the pull up the Reach enjoying the sunshine and light westerly.   The chatter on the radio confirmed that I was not the only one having a slow morning.  It seemed that anyone in the bay experienced tons on marks but limited action.  One guy reported a blue fish.  Another capt and I were comparing notes about 30 yards from one another.  A short conversation, we were both empty handed and we motored away.   No sooner did we part, and the starboard pole starts dancing in the rod holder, while the reel begins screaming.  I took her out of gear and jumped on the rod.  Not knowing if those marks were bass or blue fish, I started cranking slowly to collect a good 150 ft of line, the 9ers and what felt like a solid fish.  For ever three cranks I gained on the braid the fish took back a crank.  I kept hoping that I'd see or feel some evidence that this was a bass and not a blue.   A smile crossed my face as I traced the trajectory of my line.  About 80 ft astern the bass started fining.  Slow and steady pressure was my mantra.  As I got the fish and gear closer to the boat, I thought about retrieving the camera for a shot but quickly thought better of it.  Alongside the boat, he shook like crazy trying to spit that shad.  Fortunately, the hook was dug in the corner of both lips top and bottom.  Lipped the fish and hoisted it over the rail to deck.

He taped out at 37.5 and weighed 20.2 lbs on the digital handheld.

Nice fish and awesome experience.  That was it for the day.  Not another taker but I'll be out later in the week to give it another try.

Got back to port around 1:45, cleaned the boat and then the fish.  The stomach was loaded with 2-3 inch crabs hmmmm! ;D
Next time....

Pilot, Nice report and great fish.  Now you have plenty of fresh fish for a while.  I know they are out there.  Just like you, I was marking plenty of nice fish Sunday but they just did not want to bite. Maybe things will improve after this rain.  Tbone
