Oil Leak on Yamaha HPDI 250
« on: April 19, 2011, 01:32:29 PM »
I went to my boat and there was oil on the transom that leaked from the internal oil tank. :headscra: I had the engine raised all of the way, and I believe that the internal oil tank cap may be faulty. It has 3 or 4 wires going into it and the seal or gasket may be bad, but I am not sure. The total amount of oil was about that of a shot glass or two.

Has anyone ever seen this? I am windering if it is common. I had some oil pump work done at the end of last season, but I dont think that has anything to do with this (at least I hope). Any feedback is appreciated.

Never had that problem with mine.  Check the oil line and as you said the cap.  Sure you didnt spill any on last fill?

Yeah. I have an auxiliary tank that I fill on the stern. I think it is leaking at the cap and then when the level reaches the leak, it stops. Not a lot, but enough to be messy.

Does anyone know what those caps go for or what the wires are for?

the wires are the sencors that feed the engine oil and sound alarm when level is low

Hey Joe.
We do see this on occasion. Very easy to see if this is where its coming from.
OEM Part # should be 61A-85730-01-00 Oil Level Gauge assembly. $140.55 from Yamaha. If you replace it, make sure you put the new one in the same position as the old one.
Let me know how you make out.

It must be the cap. I checked on her today and there was no spilage at all. The difference was that this time I left the engine straight ahead. When it leaked it was turned a bit to reduce the angle on the hydraulic hoses. I am gonna keep an eye on it and replace it shortly.

Thanks everyone for the input.

We have seen the neck of the oil reservoir go out of round and cause a leak as well. I would replace the sender first and if it still drips replace the reservoir. I've done a few Mercury's with the same issue.
