Irish Ayes fishing 10/7

Started the day at 8am.  Had Andy and Bob G with me today.

Looked for seabass from the red church to the Sea Girt reef.  Found one keeper seabass and several shorts.  Had way too many bites with no hook ups.  Clam, squid and spearing for bait.

Tried jigging over some marks that showed a lot of potential.  I put on a spro clone jig that I made and had a friend put green tubing on instead of hair.  Got to the bottom and jigged it twice.  I felt a pick up and run.  Two headshakes and GONE.  Biten right off!  Had to be a blue fish.  Oh well, it's a good thing I made a lot of these clones.  Immediately put on another jig.  No other hits on it.

All of the morning was now used up.  We went on the troll using five trolling outfits.  Put out two wire lines with shad umbrellas.  Ran a 9 inch shad on the center of one and a clark spoon on the other.  Two mono reels with stretch 18s and one rig with a clark spoon following a four ounce drail.  I put Andy on the helm.  I now know how the deck looks while trolling.  Nice feeling not running the boat for a change.

We were about an hour into trolling when the clark spoon rod bent over.  Bob pulled the rod out of the holder and started bringing in the fish.  Andy asked if he should take the motor out of gear.  NO!  KEEP IT STEADY FOR A MINUTE OR TWO AND SEE IF WE GET ANOTHER HOOK UP.  I didn't get the whole sentence out when one of the stretch 18s hooked up with a fish.  I grabbed the rod and cranking.  After several cranks I told Andy to take the motor out of gear and come back to the cock pit.  Not because of a struggle with the fish but because one of the wire line rods was now bent over.  Andy grabbed this rod and we saw the last two rods pull down and begin to bounce.  Five rods hooked up and three guys on the boat.  Chinese fire drill in full sessions.  Umbelievably, we landed all five fish!  No tangles, no fouled lines, no hooks flying. 

After this fiasco we put three lines back out.  Hooked up with another bluefish.  Trolled for another hour after catching this blue and didn't get another hit.  Such is fishing.

So, for a day when we put a lot of hours on the motor and miles on the boat, we were saved by the savage bluefish.  Two blues were about seven pounds and the others were twelve pounds plus. 

Great weather.  Started with a NW wind that swung to the east by days end.  Water temp was sixty-nine.

Capt Mike, I don't mind giving the helm up.  Nice to be on the deck chatting with the crew.  That's one downfall of a pilot house boat.

16 or 13?? hmm, that could be why. for some reason i thought you always monitered the silence on ch 10,,, ok 16 or 13 it is next time


The reason I asked 16 or 13 is that a boat called for someone on a Parker on either 16 or 13.  I was monitoring 13 because I was coming up on a bridge and they are on that frequency.  I am on 16 and 10 at all other times.
