After seeing the nice weather window last week for today. I thought it would be a good time to get the crew together for another shot.
This morning I met up with Master Jigger Bucktail Bob,Kenny and 3rd Times a charm Rolly Eyes Paul-e.
The plan was to hit area A.. Then shot over to area B and if that didn't work head on to Area C t^
As we approached our first stop we were greeted to a lot of life... So.. Down goes the Jigs....
There were maybe 3 or 4 boats working this large area. I was optimistic.. but not convinced this was the place to be. So we stuck it out a while. Trolling.. Jigging.. Trolling.. and.. Yea.. Jigging.. After a couple hours I happened upon Capt. Joe G.. Working the same area. His words to me... Made our Day. "ROD Don't leave this area!.. Work it Hard"! So that's what we did for the next 5 hours..trolling trolling and some more trolling. The life was out of this world. Pods of hundreds of dolphins. playing with the boat. whales. turtles. you name it.
So It's now about 3:pm..And were not giving up.. I see Joe stopped. and tells me he's hooked up on jig.. So in comes the gear and back to the jigs.
And wouldn't you know it. I hear Jigmaster Bob.. go UGH. I look over and he is in a fight.. Now this is where the heart starts pumping.. Big fish in the area.. Bobs losing line.. After abut a 15 minute battle. Bob starts to get 90% of his line back.. Then..!! I hear SNAP and Oh SH!T. I look over and Bob has a Jigging rod the is about 2 foot long.. it snapped right above the Second eye from the reel.. I'm like WTF!. Bob said I got this. . Kenny runs in the cabin for the gloves and says I'll hand line this #%^$%%@. Bob was able to gain another 20 feet on the fish using just the one eye. Kenny took over and hand lined this fish right to my waiting Gaff!... Swing and Miss!!. One more spin and Bam! You want to talk about Heart Pumping. OMG!! and all on tape t^ Just need to turn it to G rated.. If there will be anything left ;D
Great day for us.. Thanks for the heads up Joe. I still hear it in my head. "ROD!.. Don't Leave Here"!! ;D Hurts more since this was the place I left last week..
A lot more to come.. I'm beat...

Another fine day on the Phyllis Ann and another great job by captain and crew! t^
It was a long but fun day on the water. We found life and, after the last trip when we found life and left it for, what we thought were greener pastures, we knew we had to stick it out and hope they would turn on the feed bag.
We marked fish and bait. We jigged and trolled. For the longest time we couldn't buy a bite. Finally, after a lot of hard work we got bit, and this one was going on the deck.
I don't think the entire fight was 15 minutes. I think it was less than 10. But, when you have a tuna on the line, all sense of time goes out the window.
It seemed like everything was going well. Rod maneuvered expertly to avoid the fish going under the boat, the fish was tired and coming up nicely in it's clockwise death spiral, and then SNAP!
My immediate thought was that the fish would be gone, but when I saw it was still attached, I knew we were going to land it. I started cranking on the reel and my (now) 3 foot jigging stick while Kenny grabbed his gloves. Kenny was just as determined to bloody the deck with this fish. Paulie had the camera and captured the dramatic scene.
Kenny grabbed the line and hand-lined the fish up the last 20 or 30 feet as I cranked in the slack and Rod stood by with the gaff. A couple more feet and WHACK! Rod stuck it perfectly! Kenny quickly grabbed the other gaff and together they hoisted a beautiful 80 pounder over the gunwale.
High fives all around! Tuna in the boat! w00t w00t
It was awesome! clp
Of course the main reason we go out is to catch tuna, but, to me, just being out there with all that life in the blue water is thrilling to me. On this trip we were treated to sights of large turtles, a huge shark eyeing up our trolling spread and acres of dolphins treating us to an amazing show and playing in our bow wake.
Here's some footage I shot of that. Hopefully, when I get better with this YouTube editing, I'll put some more video together and add music. For now, here's some of the raw footage.

Great fishing with my friends Kenny and Paulie. And proud to be a part of one of their excellent adventures! ;D
Thanks Rod for another terrific day of tuna fishing on the Phyllis Ann! t^

One more of pawle

Don't believe you have to spend a lot of $$$ on fancy jigs to catch fish. This one cost me about $4 when I bought it 5 or 6 years ago. It got a little beat up over the years, so I added some prism tape before the trip.
Still worked. ;D
-
Great job by the entire crew. slt clp clp
Catching fish with deck chairs aboard...hmmmmmm, I may have to rethink my tactics. Nah. TT^

Nice Video Bob. Here are a couple more pics.. Kenny's monster from the Mahi Buoy. This one was tough to gaff.. but Kenny was able to hoist him over the side t^
