Listen to the weatherman and you may have missed a very good weekend of bass fishing. It was a 50/50 with chances of stiff winds, chances of thunderstorms and of plenty of fog covering Raritan Bay all the way to Delaware Bay.
With the urge to land, a few trophy bass most garden state anglers took their chances and ventured out anyway. Bigger bass are definitely starting to show and what seems like thousands of bluefish are in the Raritan and Barnegat Bays.
The action will only get better from here. If you are looking to fish, now is the time when anything can happen and almost any bait or lure can land a trophy.
Sandy Hook’s own Captain Ron Fishermen picked away at bass up to 26lbs. Congratulations to 11-year-old Birthday boy Patrick Mculla who landed the trophy pool winner. Captain Ron put anglers on fish mostly on the incoming tides. Captain Ron’s Fishermen will be sailing daily in search of monster bass.
I switched it up this weekend and headed south on the Sea Star III in Cape May and joined the 3rd Annual Keith Bush Drum Invitational’s in Delaware Bay. Conditions were foggy and windy but laid down about 1 hour before sun set. Fishing clams with a fish finder rig in 26 ft of water; we were able to land seven fish from 48 to 76 lbs. I personally took bragging rights this year with the pool winner and a solid 25-minute fight with a 76lb Black Drum. Yes, I did eat the Drum already and I have to say it was excellent.
Beware of the fog and your location, stay alert and away from the channels and others, do not wander around in the fog it can be extremely dangerous. Always wear your life jacket when visibility is poor, especially the kids, no matter how big you think your boat is, remember there is always someone bigger, like a 600 ft oil tanker. If you think it cant happen to you, this weekend was the busiest “Sea Tow” weekend to date due to fog and wind conditions. Be safe, prepared and courteous to others.
Fish On!!
