Re: Point Pleasant Canal Fishing Reports 9-22-08 (Morning)
« Reply #301 on: September 22, 2008, 12:20:01 PM »
Hit the canal this morning at 6AM, prolly should have been there at 4:30AM as that was slack water. Worked the north end at the mouth of the river for over an hour with a pink Fin-S looking for weakfish, and not a hit, not even a bluefish. Met up with Sam shortly after, and his results were about the same as mine. Then he tried for tog, caught one, and then disappeared, I think he went to the south end of the canal, he mentioned he might. So I worked up the wall casting a Rapala to see if any stripers were around. Worked all the way up to the 88 Bridge with zero action on the rapala, and fially, at the eddy just north of the 88 bridge, I picked up a striper, about 22 inches. Fished till 10:30 or so, and that was it, one hit, one fish.

Seemed slow all the way around, the only action was tog, and Shoprite Eddie and Kim said even though they were catching, it was slow compared to last week. Couple of other guys catching tog also, crab or clam, didn't seem to matter, it all worked. Cigar Tony worked up the wall also, after me as the water quieted down, and he did nothing also. His friend caught one small blue, and that was it.

Cigar Tony tells me he and friends have been getting stripers in the Manasquan surf early mornings, using a broken backed Bomber, even a few making it over the 28 inch mark.

Chris tells me he's been bailing blackfish in the canal(but not this morning), and he's getting some large blues using live mullet with a bobber, just throwing it out there during slack water as he fishies for tog.

So all in all a slow morning, but was nice to finally catch a fish and see some of the guys, and find out whats been going on. May give it a shot this afternoon, slack water on the incoming is 5-5:30PM. If I go, I'll report later.

Hit the canal again at 5PM. Water was still incoming due to go slack. Brandon was fishing tog right at the entrance of Pinebluff, so I was talking to him and casting a shad to see if any blues were around, nada. Went to the mouth of the river at slack water and worked a pink Fin-S looking for weakfish, and nada again, LMAO. I left at about 6:30 as Lost9340's car died and I had to go fix it. It was extremely slow, outside of guys fishing for tog. Lots of people fishing tog, and catching also, either clam or crab seemed to be working fine. Didn't see any other fish caight except for juvenilie sea bass on sandworms at the mouth of the canal.

Nice catch Jerry. I may head down there again this weekend. Thought about bringing my Dad. He hasn't fished in years and would love the action those little guys are providing.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe I read this here. Slack tide is about 1-2 hours after the inlet?

The Canal is usually slowed down closer to 3 hours!

Although, they are catching on the incoming so 1-2 hrs after the Inlet may be better!!

Nice catch RB, stripers I am assuming?? What bait or lure? Looking foward to seeing the pics. Hard to fish the canal when I am up here in Beantown, on my daughters laptop, LMAO, but I'll be back on tuesday, and hopefully find some time to fish.
