BUCKTAILING BIG FLUKE ( SUMMER FLOUNDER )
Here are a few tips we have developed to catch Big Fluke with Bucktails. Everyone in NJ and surrounding states has been facing greater size restrictions on Fluke year after year and although there is no lack of catching, putting keepers in the box has become a much harder task. Personally i have been bucktailing for fluke for along time but i have definitely seen the method gain more popularity of the last 5 years on Private, Charter, and Party Boats. We run special deeper water Bucktail trips for fluke and the trips have been a great success the last few years.Fluking itself as well as the tackle that is available has changed alot over the years. We always receive questions from anglers looking to take up the bucktail method for the time. Here are some of the new methods we have learned over the last few years. Bucktail Selection, Line, Lures, Stinger Hooks, Teasers, Depth and Technique are a few of the tips I will cover.

That was a very interesting article. I never thought to try mackerel strips. But when you think about it, it makes sense with the color pattern and all of the mack, also the skin is nice and tough. I can't wait to try some.

Loved the article, just have sort of a silly question. I haven't ventured out to waters that deep before in my boat and would be a little reluctant. Are there locations (without giving up secret spots of course) where one would say it's safe to roll out in a 21' Wellcraft V20, or am I pretty much confined to what I find in the bay? I've only got about 2' of freeboard in the stern.
-
You can fish the outside with no problems on good weather days. Your 2' of freeboard at the stern is a whole lot more than I have on my 25'er with a cut out transom.

Thanks Ayes. As I mentioned in my introduction thread I am really taking my solo boating experience in small steps. Haven't made the venture past Flynn's yet. Even with all my years going out on and even manning other people's boats it still resonates differently for me now that I am in charge and responsible for the lives on my vessel.

And that is the attitude that will get you thru the learning stages...being responsible! It's too easy to jump the gun and wonder out where you should not be. It will all fit together in time. t^

That was a great read. I've never tried bucktailing for fluke but I'm definitely going to give it a shot next time I head out. Is there any particular bait that people like? I picked up some Berkley Gulp Shrimp, which I plan to use as a teaser above the bucktail, but I'm not fully sure of what kind of bait to use (squid? perhaps another Gulp shrimp?). I also have some 4" chartreuse curly tail grubs, so that's another possibility. As far as squid goes, I have used it before but have never had much luck on it besides catching sea robin and skates (ugh). I also get confounded on which type of squid to use - the clean kind or the kind that still has all the ink in it.

Nothing to add to that post. Must read!!!

Thanks Capt Jerry for putting this article together. Have to get some of the smaller size bucktails you described. Great tip on the stinger hook too.
