JD Customs first run
« on: November 04, 2010, 08:27:53 PM »
Here's my first run of plugs.  All that's left to do is topcoat them and get some hooks on.  I'm more pleased with my turning, than my finishing.  Hope they catch some fish!

Nice work Jason.  Are you going to put bucktails on some of those plugs?

Fine with me.  But, if we fish back there, I don't think you will have too much time out of the cabin fishing with us. ;D

Thanks guys.  I put them in water to see how they sit.  All the needles float, the purple popper sinks to the bottom and sits nose up slightly.....Not sure how that will react upon retrieve....The yellow, redheaded poppers, and the polaris type all sit nose out of the water at rest, which should be good, and hopefully throw a little water coming in.  Might have to take the weight out of the ones that sink, as I used a harder wood on them, ramin, and western red cedar on the others.  The needles are also ramin, but not weighted, but seem to do nice on top.

I'd like to get bucktails on the rear hook, but I haven't got the supplies for it yet.  I'll throw trebles on them for now.

As I'm pleased with the way the redheaded ones came out most, I'm gonna try and get a bunch made up and get a few out to some folks to test out and give me some feedback and hopefully some pictures with a fish on the hook.

Nice going Jason.  What are the weights on the ones that sink?  If they are sitting butt down your weight bight be okay just have to relocate them more towards the center of the balancing point.

Hope this helps.

Happy Catching

Paul

Where did you pick up the cedar?   I'm looking for somewhere local to pick up some cedar so I can turn out a batch.

Hold off on the rear trebles, I'll hook ya up with some a few dressed tail hooks.

Only tailweighted.  The sinking ones are the heavier hardwood.  I think that's my problem there.  I got the cedar from Woodhaven in Manahawkin.  Their other location didn't have them.  I got 36" long 2x2 baluster stock for $2.54 each I think.

dont put trebles on the rears, if anything put a plain siwash instead of a treble.  but if you need dressed siwash hooks, i could hook you up too.  easily done, as i change all my lures rear hooks out to self dressed siwash.  that top red head pencil is my favorite, and should be a killer.

Chris - If you wanna swap some dressed hooks for some cedar blanks I have, that'd be cool!  Or let me know and I can pick up some cedar for you if you don't wanna head out to Manahawkin or can't find it elsewhere.  Or you could come to Manahawkin and we can hit the sand in LBI.

also, that purple pencil should be fine if it sinks.  easier to cast into a head wind, and pencils that sink shouldnt be a problem since they are worked a little faster anyways.

I'm gonna try em' all out.  Might not even topcoat this batch.  If they don't fish, they will make kickass ornaments on the Xmas tree this year.   TT^

a sinking needle would be good too, especially on a day like today, with the rougher surf.
