Stumbled across this site in Boat U.S. magazine. Very cool info tracking commercial ships. Pretty soon the will have rec. fishermen tracked too (or already are via DSC). Your favorite honey hole will be exposed.

I believe you are thinking of AIS-Automatic Identification System
the DSC will give your position when you key your mike if others have it set up that way--And you don't have to transmit your pos. if you don't want to from your radio.

 t^ ... Look for Fluke - U on the AIS on weekends. I have a unit on my boat. No secrets here....LOL ....  chrz
