I really miss flounder season.  I haven't fished for them in several years.

I'm going to try to get out at least once this season for them.  Maybe rent a small boat and go to town on those flatties! t^

We could all go up to Shark River and rent a bunch of those rowboats with the little 10hp (or whatever they are) motors on them from Capt. Bills!  That's the most fun way to do it anyway. ;D

Capt Bill's is now R&M Bait and Tackle. They do not rent boats anymore. You only have the Fisherman's Den for boat rentals now in Shark River.  :P

I guess it is called priorities.  I have fished for over 50 years down here and ezach year it is different.  This year the bite is a little slow.  No hurry they will be there.  I will probably try the Mantalokin Bridge tomorrow morning some time.  If anything pops I will report it but I am not to optimistic.

Watched a couple of boats anchored off the Perth Amboy beach.  Didn't see any fish being caught.  Need a couple of sunny 60 degree days to get them chewing.

why does everyone say the water needs to warm up ???
Title: Re: winter flounder are u ready

If its not the water temperature then what gets them moving.
Title: Re: winter flounder are u ready
Post by: mgm on March 26, 2009, 04:36:01 PM
I think its a combination of the longer daylight and water temp after the spawn.  It's different every year, and this spring has been cool.

Post by: Capt -Jerry P on March 29, 2009, 08:59:37 AM
why does everyone say the water needs to warm up ???

We say it down our way because water temps directly correlate with the scattered fish in barney bay grouping up and moving to and combining to manasquan river fish river.

Alot does depend on the run of fish that are there to begin with... which is different each each year. The better the run the better you will pick fish even if the temp is off.

But i can tell you no matter what the run our best fishing in the manasquan river is ALAWAYS when the water is warmer. 48-50

Havent seen any consistent or reliable good reports yet. Some body can go to a spot today and next week might kill them.

Winter flounder are ona time table just like fluke are but in my opinion water temps control the eating patterns more. Moving and eating are 2 different things.

When fluke arrive they come around the same time every year, but water temps are what makes em chew.

Just what i noticed the last 10 years personal flounder fishing. and 5 years of party boat 2 trips a day everyday of the season.

I know i have heard it i have cuaght them when its 38 but its not optimal for good fishing even if you did have a great day in cold water.

Stories of catching them with ice flow etc 20 years ago doesnt interest me. Things change.

Present day is alot different.

Yeah, easy for you to say Joe.  Florida weather and water temps are what this time of year?

That's all well and good Capt. Jerry P. but the whole thing is about catching something.  Many of us are just out there for the fun of it and to be able to experiment and have fun.  Part of the fun is talking about it.  I think we all realize that the fishing this time of year is slow as there is a lot of factors that keep the fish off the bite but just knowing they are there and might bite is enough to start fish tales a goin.

I have been fishing these waters for over 50 years and I still love to talk and fantasize about catching fish early.

Happy Catching

Paul

Paul i understand that completely. I also like all stories from the past. Nor am i trying to ruin anyones fun.

I think you are mis understanding my whole point. I also like talking about all fishing and past fisheries as i have on the site about many different thing.

Somebody asked why is everyone talking about water temps for flounder like they dont matter and i answered with my opinion.

In the present years it is my OPINION that water temps play a huge part.

When there was more fish around you will catch more fish at a less than ideal w ater temp...

Thats all

I am not takling away from any of your or anyone elses past stories which i enjopy very much.
