May 23-Sept. 4 with 6 fish per day. As before, 18" bag limit.
Supposedly this is good because it allows for memorial day weekend fishing (though not labor day), which creats alot of revenue for the boats/shops. Personally, i would have rathered more time on the end but i guess this is best.

i would also rather a later season. My larger flukes usually come in late summer, early fall.

well, i hate to say this....but the only bright spot about the regulations is we didnt get stuck with that closed season crap they laid out there for us in the beginning ::)

None of the options were good. They had to pick between only what was given to them.
The one that was chosen gave the most fishing days, although the beginning of the season is typically slow.

A later season would have been better. Like Joe said, we will get a longer season, but late May/early June isn't usually prime fluking for most of us. However, I'm sure they figured that all in when they offered that option. ::)
It's sad to say, but at least we have a season this year. ;)

We do have a season this year only because of the hard work of the organizations that we support.
If the SSFFF did not hire a scientist to do his study we would either be shut down this year or have about a four week season for 20"+ fish.

I agree that the whole situation is a bit of a turd sandwich.. a shame we have to get to a " well at least we get to fish" attitude, but there it is.. The shortened season bugs me more than the loss of fish, as I think 6- 18" fluke is plenty of meat for a rec guy to take.. but I too hate to give ANY ground in these kind of battles..At least the size stayed the same..something that has'nt happened in many years, so maybe we'll see a little better keeper ratio this season.. but of course that could lead to even tougher rules.. chrz

If the NY lawsuit goes through look for even tougher regulations to hit NJ. :-X

nosmly Well at least they didn't change the size or limit. I agree with Capt joe tha none of the options were good.

Sperzonkers2, they did change the limit from 8 to 6.
Don't know why they did this as the makers of the regulations say that there are only 2 keepers caught on a typical fishing trip. If they are correct in that assessment, the limit could be anywhere from 2 fish to infinity and the keeper numbers will remain the same (2), so why lower the limit if it does not affect the final outcome. 5hrug

To have a season that runs from around Memorial Day to around Labor Day makes sense from a financial standpoint. That is when you will have the most anglers fishing, and consequentially, the most anglers spending money on bait, tackle, boat rentals etc.
Most of us are used to fishing all year round. So for us (the avid "hardcore" fishermen it would be better to have a later season. But there is a significantly large decrease in the amount of casual anglers on the water and spending money in the B&Ts once Labor Day has come and gone.

Saw this coming months ago...not suprised at all! I too would love a later season into October or so, but I know that doesn't make the most sense for Charter and Head boats to make money. So, if the season revolves around them...that is fine with me. I will catch keeper fluke early in the year from a boat and put the meat away to eat, and hit the beach for C&R fluking. Best of both worlds. And...I will make sure I make the Governor's Cup for one last day ::)!
