Ok, my computer is finally fixed. Tues. morning I headed up to Sandy Hook to get back into the salt. After everyone telling me this was the place, I had to see it for myself. I parked in the Sandy Hook National Park and fished the ocean side near some rocks. I had no luck there but the guy fishing next to me caught a shorty. I then crossed the street to the bay side to check it out. The water was shallow and I waded out about fifty feet and the water was only up to my knees. Nothing seem to be happening there so I jumped into my car and headed more north and picked a spot where I saw what looked to me to be a sand bar not too far out from the shore (and some bikinis). I couldn't wade out too far because undertoe was brutal. I fished for about an hour using clouser and bunker flies but the spot I was eying was about 100 yards off shore. I saw what I thought was bait fish and that was
confirmed when all hell broke loose. Fish started diving and splashes where coming up from the water, it was an all out blitz. I stood there watching it happen out of my reach and I got whacked by a five foot wave that put a couple of gallons of water in my waders. I was soaked, tired, and frustrated. I decided to head back to the car to dry off when I lady that I spoke to earlier stopped me and said "you're not leaving now, they're getting closer" and she was right. I went back into the water but my eight weight couldn't get the fly into the zone. (The ten weight I ordered didn't get to me on time for this trip) The two guys fishing next to me were using big surf rods to cast out nickle spoon lures. They got into the strike zone and got three shorties each. I was hating life at that point and I was dying to get out of my waders so I headed back to my car skunked with my first striper out there somewhere laughing at me. I really seem to suck at this but I am not giving up anytime soon. I'm heading back to the ocean on Tues. morning to try again. Anyone want to meet up, let me know.

I sympathise with you. Been there and done that now I always wear a good tight belt on my waders.lol Your time will come I just caught my first striper of the year last weekend so hang in there. The fish are there, all up and down the Jersey shore.
I like to use a #9WF with a 12# tippit (leader) along with my 9' fly rod and plenty of backing. I haven't used it yet this year though. Do you tie your own flies? My supply is low and I haven't been able to tie any over the winter. I guess I should get started and get my butt in gear the season is here and I only have about 10 or so left.

Reading between the lines I can see that although you did not catch that elusive first bass this year, you indeed had a good time.
Your story is one told often by the surf rat. 'Dang, was down there, the fish were there, you could see them busting water, but they were two casts out and I just couldn't get to them.'
Great report Vito, keep after them and the big one will get to you. You can't get them all the time and if you did, you wouldn't want to come back. Because it would not be a challange anymore. t^

Ped579 I do tie my own flies except a couple of bunker flies I bought. IrishAyes, I had a blast!

Glad you made it up, even though no fish sounds like a day to remember TT^
On the bay side even though it seems shallow in spots it drops off to 15-20' depth.....also in the coves the bass heard the bait up in 1-2' of water...... ;D
