Someone I know was telling me that you can't sell a bluefin tuna you've caught...I can't find any information saying you can't. Anyone know anything about this?
-
I have not been able to find any general regulation on the sale of a legal catch of a recreational limit by a recreational fisherman in NJ.
There are regs on the sale of shellfish, striped bass etc.
I recall seeing an attempt by the Garden State Seafood Association to get a bill passed prohibiting it some time ago because of the claim that it was a public health issue.
I would be interested if someone can point to a specific NJ regulation on this subject.

grtn Was the bluefin tuna caught from your boat? Are you a licensed and insured commercial fisherman, licensed in the state of NJ for retail sales? Are you going to collect the sales tax and report it as earned income to the federal and NJ state government? Are you going to be selling the bluefin tuna as a new or used fish?

I've never actually caught one, but I was just wondering in the event that I do catch one. I have the permit and everything to catch them. I'm just a recreational fisherman looking to maybe pay for my gas by selling the fish...Just a hypothetical..

Just a little info here, No sale of bluefin is permitted on fish in the school, large school,or medium class . Only fish at 70" or greater can be sold. Check NMFS for more info. Professional Charter Captains with a General Category Bluefin Tuna Permit can sell with some restrictions. At least thats the way I remember it. ;D Bluefin are regulated directly by NMFS not by states. THey are pelagics and fall under their their authority.

If you visit the NMFS site look at the different types of permits and this should give the info you need.

right from nmfs permits in the FaQ'S
Q: May I sell my tunas if I have an HMS Angling category permit?
A: No, if you have an HMS Angling category permit, you may not sell your catch. You must have a commercial fishing permit if you wish to sell your landings.
THE ANSWER IS NO!

Pretty much goes for any type of "seafood." You have to have a commercial license to sell any of your catch, including bait, etc...
