Title: Trolling set up recommendations
Post by: striper sniper on May 14, 2009, 03:49:05 PM: I'm looking to get a rod/reel/line set up specifically for trolling.(blues, stripers) Any tips or recommendations on what tackle to go with?

Post by: CapBob on May 14, 2009, 06:46:19 PM: I use a 7 1/2' Medium action Ugly Stik with Okuma Convector Reel (has line counter).

The rod is tough and has great action with Bunker Spoons.

I normally troll my Bunker Spoons and Umbrella Rigs on Wire, but Mono or Braid works just great, you have to use a drail weight to get your line down to proper depth.

I have two other rods set up with Yozuri Floro Carbob line, smaller diamiter than mono and resists wear much better. I use these for trolling Plugs, Stretches and rigged eels.

Normally I troll two lines, work the water column to find the fish...have each line at differant depths. i will start with 1 line about 1/3 the way down and the other 3-4 ft off the bottom and adjust accordingly to action and readings.

You'll get a lot of differant opinions about what Rods-reels to use ...everybody has their own preferance. You want your rod to be tough enought, yet have a lot of action in it.

Post by: PeggyLee on May 14, 2009, 09:13:42 PM: No one rod will do everything,however a 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 midium tip rod will work plugs and stretches,metal and tubes fine.
I like the Penn 3/0, 4/0, Mariner 49 stainless they are classics and great workhorses.Many guys have used them for years and they hold up.
There are some new ,lite level and line counters on the market that are wonderful and wouldn't brake the bank. Good Luck and see ya out there. AJ. t^

Can you explain the "drail weight"?

Post by: IrishAyes on May 15, 2009, 05:49:20 AM: The wire setup is what you use instead of mono or braid. Usually put on a backer, 300 feet of wire and then a top shot. The wire is either monel or stainless, 30 or 40#. It has a sink rate of approximately 1 foot for every 10 feet of wire in the water. Thus, if you put all 300 feet of wire in the water your business end will be approximately 30 feet down. You do need some experience when using wire as it will bird nest and kink if you are not paying attention.

The drail is nothing more than an inline sinker. Torpedo shaped with beaded chain on both ends.

Post by: Hunter 2 on May 15, 2009, 08:13:17 AM: My reels are Daiwa Sealine SLD-20 spooled with 80lb power pro braid, And medium heavy ugly sticks, Tiger series, I like the reel because it had dual drag washers, (It has drag washers on both sides) and a lever drag with a loud clicker. I think if it had a line counter it would be better, Instead I mark my line with permanent marker every 50 feet. As Capt.Bob said a 7 1/2" pole is a good size. Using outrodders is a good idea too. Okumas are good reels and have a good warrantee.

Post by: Still Running on May 15, 2009, 08:31:14 AM: I run Daiwa Accudepth ADP47LC reels with 1000 feet of wire on them. They cost around $45.00 and hold up well. With the counter on it you know how many feet you have out. Like Joe said it’s like 10 feet out for 1 foot down. As far as rods go I use Daiwa Heartland rods (mid $30's) around 10 foot long.

Now for the rig-how much leader material from the wire to the spoon?

Do I tie on the drail/wieght off of a 3 way swivel at end of wire?

How much weight-2oz-6oz??
