Title: Offshore Wrecks 5-20-09

Headed out Tues night with Capt Bobby on the Gambler from Point.  Game plan was to search all night for wreck numbers and settle onto various wrecks in different depths as the sun came up. Great plan, great execution, great crew and fishermen...it just didnt happen for us.
  Started out in the Hudson on a snag in 400+ feet. Some life with ling but not much doing. Worked progressively shallower and inshore through the day bouncing from one wreck/snag to another to see what was up. Not much doing anywhere.
  Handful of ling, a few cod, few pollack.  Dogs werent too bad and were shaken off by making a quick wiggle on the wreck.  Ocean Pout was another story!! Easily 300+ caught during the day!! Ugly bastards!!!!
  Dave Arbeitman of the Reel Seat in Brielle took top honors with a nice 25lb cod on clam.  Other than that, not many highlights  ;D
  Crew did a great job getting us set up on the structure and tending to everything. No doubt I'd do this trip again, soon enough we'll hit the time of year and unfished wreck just right and get it DONE!
  Love offshore, BUT, after tuna last fall and overnight wrecks this winter, I'm looking forward to some fluke trips within eyesight of the dock!

What a bummer. At least you had a good time. More better fishing would have made it better. Doesn't always work that way.

Nice report Duffman. It is nice to explore around and find new territory. Sounds like a great effort by the capt and crew.  t^

how much weight to hold in 400+ft?

hope you gots lectric reels

nice report if not great fishing

ps nice meeting you with Mike at the marina the other week (if that was you)

Hey WB, you have the Grady, right??  Yep, that was me helping Mike get tied up. Good meeting you as well.

24 oz held with braid, 30 oz with mono.  Electric reel???  No way!!! Tough it out and sweat  ;D     I use a 6:1 ratio Diawa, it reels up fairly quick but the sacrifice is not having a low gear to muscle the fish away from the wreck.
400-500 piece of cake, its the 800-1,000 foot tilefish drops that are kinda brutal.

Get a good work out that deep. I use To long line. Good for the arms.
