I have 2 spinning outfits and want to have new line put on tomorrow.
One is a Penn Live Liner 5600 on a 7' Lamiglass. I have mono but want to put braid on it. I'd be using it inshore for snagging bunker an throwing metal and other jigs and on days with slow current for fluke.
Other is a Shimano Stella 10000 on a 7' Star plasma. I'd like to use this to pitch bait to mahi and tuna. I can put upp to 55 pounds of drag on it and was thinking about a good quality 50# mono to give a little stretch against those reel smokers but then figured I could always go with braid and just work the drag as needed.
Whats hot right now? what would you o?!?
Thanks for the advice. slt

Sufix 30 on the Penn
Sufix 65 on the Stella
Stop in tomorrow. I'll do them up for you. t^

Hi Bob,
As you know I like braid and have used Power Pro for a while now. I like it for its capability to be very sensitive to the feel of the strikes. I usually use a shock leader to give that stretch factor you are looking for. I have been hearing about the news Suffix lines that are out there that many people swear on because it is so supple and not prone to wind knots.
If the reel is filed properly that should not be an issue. I like to keep the line about 1/4 inch below the rim of the spool. Plus remember that braid's pound test is a lot smaller in diameter than mono giving you the ability to go just a little higher in line strength. I would make sure to keep within the parameter of the rods ratings as you well know.

Thanks guys t^
Anybody ever use tape instead of mono backing? What kind of tape you using?
-
Why would you use tape? 5hrug
I think it would be more of a hassle to tape the spool than to just wrap some mono on it.
-
The tape gives the braid something to bite on like the mono backing. I've never tried it though lol
-
Some braids come with a piece of tape in the box. I have been using power pro braid but I hear good things about Hi Seas wildfire braid. Its supposed to handle like mono with the feeling of braid,
-
I think I heard something about that...It's mono coating or something?
The reason I like mono is it's easy to tie knots for me because of my eyesight. The braid easily folds over on itself and can be tough to tie but I've found the 60# or higher more rigid and easier to work with.
-
Go with what works best for you. But as for putting tape on the spool I would vear away from it simply I have heard horrer stories of when going to change line the glue has muckes up the spool and it had to be taken off and cleaned by an ultrasonic. Remember your line will get wet and that moisture will permiate down to the spool reacting with the glue after time. :P
Simply put about 20 wraps of mono just enough to cover the spool and tie uni to uni to the mono and brain, But you already know that... t^

Good call Paul, thanks t^
I held off on the Stella but went with 30# Sufix on the Penn.
-
That Shimano Stella should handle braid really well! They were basically built for braid. I am using Power Pro, but would choose Sufix over the PP. I like the feel of the Sufix better. I would also just stick with some mono backing over tape.

Actually, I spooled him up with 30# Sufix, not Power Pro. t^
