Title: Fish finder rigs

Someone told me to pick up a bunch of fish finder rigs for fluking.  Whats your opinions?

Definitely can be used but the rig to use is a 2-3oz bucktail (preferably a Spro), with an 18 inch lead off it with a plain or feathered hook.
Bait both hooks with squid,killies, spearing, smelt or gulps.
Simple and works!

Hi PCramer6,

It is the basic rig that I use 90% of the time from surf or boat. It has endless possibilities how to add to it.

Make sure you get the braid resistant sleeves. No one is selling them in bulk around my house. So, I buy the bulk fishfinders for mono and then buy the braid sleeves and change them as needed.

The braided fishfinder sleeves are a green/tealish color.  The braid will cut thru the white or black sleeves given enough pressure.

I use the fishfinder over the 3-way swivel.  The fish supposedly do not feel the weight when they pick up the bait with the fishfinder rig.  That is its purpose.

Spro jigs work great.  However, in a strong current (I fish the ocean as opposed to the back bays) the smaller/lighter spro will not hold bottom and the larger/heavier Spro does not seem to work as good.  Possibly because it is hard to jig with the faster current.

Think I've only had one plastic fish finder get sawed open by braid in all the years I've been fishing braid.

Unless I'm bucktailing, I'm using a fish finder when fluke fishing.

Think True World Marine in Bayonne sells fish finders in bulk (100 per pack)...same for Har-Lee in Jersey City.

Hell, I use the when livelining for stripers or chunking too.

Only time I really don't use them is when weakfishing (worms) when I want it suspended off bottom. never had braid eath thru them.
