Title: Where are the reports?
Post by: tatz4ever on July 09, 2009, 12:21:28 AM
I keep checking this board hoping for some new reports on crabbing and clamming. Anyone catching either anywhere?

Have not been crabbing yet, want to try the pier over in Seaside park on the bay side. My brother in law says they catch crabs there all the time. He never has been crabbing but hears the stories from his buddies, he has lived in SSP for 25 yrs. First time I get a chance I will try it

The crabbing good around the Tuckerton area. Got a half dozen keepers in about an hour about a week ago.

It is not too early for crabs, but there are still a lot of throwbacks and egg carrying females.

From what I have heard and seen, Barnegat Bay dock crabbing has been slow, but picking up as this week goes on.  Dock Outfitters has had a good showing of crabs off their pier.  Boat crabbers are doing well, if they are willing to put in the time and move around.  You have to work for them, but if you work a bushel of crabs for a days outing is possible.

Beaver Dam and Dividing Creek in Southern Jersey have not disappointed so far this year.  Beaver Dam has been HOT.  You have to rent a boat there and they tow you out.  If you get there for the 6am tow, a bushel is certainly possible there as well.

Cheesequake Creek has been very productive as well.  The Navesink River has been slow pickings so far and the northern Ocean County waters have been slow as well.

As for clamming, I know they do pretty well on the bayside of IBSP near the sedges year 'round, so now really shouldn't be any different.  I have not heard any definitive reports, though, to date.  Clammers tend to be very tight lipped on their beds and clamming locations because there are so few spots.

Good Luck.  Hope this helps?

I only use fish, bunker or blues, now that I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old.  I don't want to risk salmonella poisoning.  I have used chicken in the past.  I also read of guys using turkey legs and thighs, chicken and turkey necks and eels.  I honestly don't think it makes a difference either way, but some people do.

Helps a lot, thanks for the informative response. I am planning a trip to Dividing Creek so hopefully that will make my trip worthwhile. If anyone has any clamming honey holes that they would like to PM me, please do. Myself and a friend want to get the NR shellfish permit and head down from Pennsylvania. At most, you will lose 300 clams! LOL Better yet if anyone would like to take two guys out for some clamming and crabbing, drop me a line. We will bring lunch and gas you up for your generosity and knowledge. You can even blindfold us so we don't know where your spot is! ;D

I don't clam and don't have any spots...sorry!  There are a few on this list who may chime in.  I know the BLINDFOLD may be a requirement ;D.

Before you go to DC, give a call to both DC and Beaver Dam and check the reports out.  You may be better off going to Beaver Dam which is just a few minutes down the road from DC.
