Welcome grtn!

Nice catching there on the pier.  Those are sea robins.  Pretty common in our waters and not considered a sport fish, but they can be fun and annoying all at once!  They also make good bait for fluke fishing ;D.

thanks for the info, we definitely had fun fishing on the pier today, it was our first time doing ocean fishing and had no idea what to expect. we caught several of these, some stingrays, and some fluke. My father-in-law even caught something else we are trying to figure out..... what kind of fish is this? Well for your first time ocean fishing you did very well...especially for August in the surf ;D!  Glad to see you had a good time fishing and Casino Pier is a great place to do it.  Thanks for the report.

That is a bluefish, aka Atlantic Pirahnas, Yellow Eyed Demons.  That is a "cocktail" size bluefish and can get double that size or larger.  They are fantastic fighting fish and usually travel in large schools eating.  Most of the time, you can catch a lot of them when they are there and they will keep you busy catching.  They are fairly good eating when prepared properly too.

heres a little picture guide,,,http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/2009/digmar16-17.pdf

which is from The 2009 Marine Fishing Issue of the Fish and Wildlife DIGEST, published by the state and available in most stores with sporting goods in it. one important feature of the digest is it contains the restrictions for our waters

the issue is available here, http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/digmar.htm
