Title: Penn Sargus series reels
Post by: SurfJockey on August 19, 2009, 02:05:41 PM: The Craptiva is taking a Craptiva. :'( I was looking at the Sargus series from Penn. Anyone have any good or bad things to say about them? I'm mainly using it for deadsticking off the surf. I'm looking to stay under the $100 mark.

I'm no expert, but I'm happy with it. No problems so far, it spins nice, pretty lite.

Post by: ChrisL on August 19, 2009, 03:22:48 PM: 4000 and 6000 should be pretty much the same, just larger. Definitely better than the Captiva.
I have the Sargus in 4000 and the Slammer 560 and like both of them. Sargus is on a 7ft airwave and the slammer is on a 10ft bait rod.
The Slammer in 560 or larger is over $150.

Post by: Pfishingruven on August 19, 2009, 04:41:01 PM: I think the Sargus looks and feels completely different than the Captivas. I don't think they are even made in the same place or designed by the same person...thank the lord, PENN finally did something right.

You might be able to find a Shimano Spheros around that price if you look. IMO, a much better product than the Penn.

Also look at the Daiwa Surf Reels. You can find them under $100 and they are work horses that will last for years. I have an old Daiwa that still works after 15 years and was not the best maintained.

Wind was hard out the northeast and the surf was rough.

BTW, I matched it with the Penn Power Stick Spinning Rod. IF you buy a Penn Rod and Reel, you get a 15% discount from Fisherman's Headquarters.
