I have an old Raymarine that has never given any trouble. Don't know the model. I will change it out when it craps out (or I sell the boat.)
What I covet and you might want to look into is a radio that is DSC ready; most modern GPS's will interface with it and it can broadcast your position in an emergency (as long as you set it up correctly.) You can also set a DSC radio up with a buddy list (they need DSC too) and you can see their position on your GPS, even talk with them privately on the VHF (under the cone of silence if you will...)
I think it's pretty neat.

Standard Horizon and Icom are your 2 biggest players in the VHF radio market. There are others such as Raymarine,Uniden,Cobra,Humminbird,Furuno, and even Garmin has entered the market. Remember your radio is only as good as the Antenna its hooked up to. We sell every brand at wholesale prices. There are always Specials, Closeouts, and rebate incentives being offered to us which I pass on to the Member's here. And with it, some good knowledge as well. Give me a call at 609-812-5195 or visit us on the web at www.taskmarine.com
Thanks.
Matt.
