Title: Diamond Jigs
Post by: L.T. on September 24, 2009, 12:02:26 PM
Looking for some input. Does a hammered jig produce more strikes than a smooth one?  Just Wondering  5hrug

Some guys prefer hammered jigs while jigging bluefin tuna. There are many types and at times they all work.... and at times nothing works. Shimano butterfly jigs. sting-o pbj's and many others also catch tuna. Same for stripers, blues, albies etc... Try everything  TT^

I have not found a differance, as Noworries said to some it is a preferance........

I have had guys using both smooth and hammered on the same trip and had them produce/ or not produce pretty much equally.

Standard flat-sided with either feathers or nothing on the hook are best for me.  Personal preference though

I would suggest having a few different types and sizes of jigs on hand on any jigging trip. Some days they will hit anything that moves, sometimes it's the size of what they are feeding on that needs to be matched, and other days they SEEM picky, and hit what the other guys are throwing, and of course it's always something that you do not have. I say "seems" because sometimes it's the action imparted by the fisherman ( bouncing bottom,  speed of retrieve, retrieve-pause-retrieve, dead fall, etc. ) that gets the strikes, but because he has a different jig, others that are not imparting the same action feel the jig is "Magic".

Yes, at times it IS the jig, as one time aboard a local party boat that GOLD Hammered Jigs were the hot thing that the Stripers wanted, period! I never even owned such a gaudy looking thing, and they were not for sale on board, then or anytime after. All we could do is watch as the guys from Asbury ,Brooklyn , and Staten Island hooked fish after fish, but that was a very rare occasion. ( Yes, I do now own some of those jigs, but don't tell my friends & family)

So, when others are jigging up the fish and you are not connecting, either ask or watch what the successfull anglers are doing and attempt to do the same, I can assure you that you will catch some fish too.  <'((((><

As I do Change up often when the bite is off and have used smooth and prism.  I've  never used a hammered Diamond and was curious as to the difference, if any, in production.  What better place to ask, than on this site
Thanks Guys t^
