Title: Water/fuel seperator again.
Post by: mboy on June 18, 2007, 10:07:02 AM
Now that boat is pretty much squared away, I am ready to buy and install the racor.

I am going to opt for the one without primr bulb.

I believe irish mentioned something about the stainless mount for it. Any link to that would be apreciated.

Also, what size stainless hose clamps should I be looking to get?

This is the racor I will be going with. Is this correct?

60gph, 9.38" H x 4" W x 4" D, See Thru Bowl      320R-RAC-01

West Marine # 484964

Thanks agian all.

Hi Mboy,

Yes ... Racor with the see thru bulb (transom mount).

You will need:

1. The Racor separator and filter with bowl (it comes as a kit). What engine do you have (it matters)? Also, it is weird that there is no water separator on there already. Do you have pictures of the inside of you transom?

2. 3M 5200 FAST Cure (adhesive/chalk)

3. Qty. 4 - stainless clamps to 1 1/4" I believe.

4. A way to cut your fuel line (I use a PVC cutter).

5. You will need the barbs for the ports for the fuel like size that is installed on your boat (qty. 2).

6. I use teflon tape on the fittings. People will say no but I say yes.

7. Qty. 4 screws to mount assembly to the transom. Make sure you "OVER USE" the 5200. It does npt have to be pretty. It has to keep water from penetrating into the transom. Do not use sparingly.

I will look up what you need after I know the engine. Basically it is Mercury, Yamaha or other (I think).

A good site from the manufacturer is:

http://www.parker.com/EAD/displayCatalog.asp?menu_parkerid=46&menu_gid=3&menu_divid=109&catid=9819&catdesc=MARINE%20FUEL%20FILTRATION

Have fun,

Capt. Ed

Hi Mboy,

Actually, here is a better link on the Parker site with the specs:

http://www.parker.com/RACOR/PRODUCTTABLES/TABLE-MARINE-GAS01.JPG

I am pretty sure you need the 320R-RAC-01 but will await to hear your engine type.

Thanks,

Thanks Ed, it is a Johnson Bombardier 175.

I don't have pics of the transom, but I am 100000000% sure their is no water/fuel seperator (and surveryor told me he was shocked their wasn't one their as well).

Hi Mboy,

I am shocked too. I have installed many Racors for all new boats at a marina near my house.

I cannot find the stainless separator number. I have 3 West Marines and a Boater's World and a ton of marina shops near me. When I get back to the USA I can look. I don't have a stainless separator on one of my boats. I wish I went with it as the white powder coat does show "age." It is not real bad, don't get me wrong but I like my boats near mint looking and running.

If I see the part number on the web, I will post it. You may just have to go to a few places. This is a bad time for that "hit and miss" though. There are many places not stocking well this year.

I would buy an extra spin on filter to have on the boat as well.

Thanks,

Ed

Your help is appreciated as always Ed, thanks.

Ok, should pretty much have everything I need for most part.

4 stainless hose clamps? Is that 2 per hose?

Where does the teflon tape go?

Appreciate the help :)

Hi Mboy,

I put 2 clamps on every connection. Just my phobia ...

I use teflon tape on the threads of the fittings that screw into the separator.

Best wishes,

Capt. Ed

Thaks Ed. Loks like I got everything I need except something to cut the hose, but that shouldn't be to tough to find.

Now have to find ideal spot on transom to mount ;)

Hi Mboy,

Almost every boat I have ever worked on had room on the starboard side of the transom.

I can send a few pictures if you want when I get home tomorrow evening?

Thanks,

Ed

Mount it opposite side of your boat from your batteries t^

Thanks Ed, that would be great.

Bob, the battery is in the bilge, pretty much center and 2' or so from transom.

Next project after radio/speaker install is dual abttery and switch hookup.
May have to wait until spring tho.

Ok, got the unit today.
MUCH bigger then I thought it would be. Anyway, the bowl and filter sure are on their tight.

What size screws should I use to mount it? Thought I had ones big enough, but I don't.

Also, directions say NOT to use teflon tape on barb fittings.

Oh, their are 2 arrows, each point inward on either inlet side with 1 hole labeled out in the middle of the unit which is plugged with plastic plug.
I imagine this is the one that goes to engine (primer bulb) part of line?

Hi Mboy,

I have read their advice and ignore it. The teflon tape will not break down. But that is your decision. I prefer to have no place for air to get into the system or fuel to leak out.

I used #12 stainless screws by 1". That will depend on your transom. I cannot emphasize this enough ... use 3M 5300 Fast Cure Adhesive/chalk and make sure there is no way water will pentrate the transom through the screw holes.

Follow the arrows from the tank, to the primer bulb to your engine.

I will head over to my marina to check the boat and I will snap a picture.

Did you get the barbs for the gas lines?

Thanks,

Ed

Yes, I have the barbs. I will use the tape per your advice.

Both arrows point inward, lol. The out in center of bracket does not have an arrow. Either side potns inward, lol.

I have a 30z tube of 5200 fast on the way, so I will use all of it if I have to :)

Thanks again Ed.

Hi Mboy,

Even if you don't put them on the barb screws, put it on the plugs for the unused ports.

I have not made it to the boat today. I will tomorrow.

Give me a call if you want a sanity check or to bounce things off me.

Good luck,

Capt. Ed

Thanks Ed. I will probably be installing next week. This weekend I am going to look at transom, find place to mount, then may give you a shout next week.

As always, I appreciate your help.

Hi Mboy,

If need be, I am only a cup of coffee away. I may have some tools and tricks to prime the system that frustrate folks.

Remember, install the filter filled with fuel (I put a contained under it in case I spill some when screwing it on).

Thanks Ed. I would hate to impose on you and have you drive all the way up. That is a hike for you to help me with something which should be relatively easy (except for someone like me,lol).

Hi Mboy,

I took some pictures if you need them. I don't mind the drive if everything is set to go.

You will get it done in less than an hr.

Good luck,

Ed

Hi Mboy,

Mine seem to not have come out. Below is from my neighbor's boat that I helped him with.

Thanks,

Thanks Ed. I am going down to boat in a ittle bit and will take picture of my transom, starboard side so we can see if their is an ideal place for it.

Thanks again.

Ok, Here is a picof my transom, starboard side.

Not sure if the transom itself is tall enough to mount the recor on. Any thoughts?

Their may be room around here (which won't interefere with rod holders-mounting wise).

Title: Re: Water/fuel seperator again.
Post by: Capt. Ed on June 25, 2007, 09:27:12 AM
Hi Mboy,

As long as the fuel line has "enough room to turn" so it doesn't kink.

It looks like you could actually move it more forward to get some clearance as those rod holders are usually just sleeves. So, you should, without looking at it, be able to screw to attach the Racor anywhere in that area, not just crammed in the corner.

I think there is an easy solution (and you will not have to drill into the transom which is always a party bonus in my book.
