I just got done making some leaders and snelling about a dozen circle hooks. I kept the leaders around 30 inches. They will be used with fish finders for weight, not a 3 way. Wondering what the vet's of this forum rec's are for leader length and type of line for the leader?

Surf I assume?
Out front of bayside?
For the surf I go 12-18in of 60lb floro. Too long and it doesn't cast well and the wave action will wrap the leader around the main line.
And I recently heard someone mention an interesting point on this. If they're lookin for clams, they are probably looking near the floor. So a short leader keeps the bait where the fish are looking.
I also noticed last year that all the hookups I had on Hi-Lo rigs last year were on the bottom hook.

I always use the fish finder no a 3 way. Leades I have arerom 18-32" depending on whre I am at andhow the tide is running
-
shorter leader with a fish finder rig 18" to 24" and a longer on a three way more like 36"
-
i usually like a 2-3 ft section of fluoro carbon with the fish finder rig as well
-
I like to use a 3 foot 30lb flouro leader with a 7/0 Octopus circle hook for clamming while anchored.

Surf: 18-30" 40-50lb ldr
Boat: 24-36" 30lb-50lb ldr

My question was meant for boat fishing, but it's good to see what you guys use for surf as well. I gotta laugh at myself.... I measured the rigs I tied earlier and they range from 23" to 31". LOL ;D Obviously I eyeballed them, but hopefully they all get used soon! t^

I guess I will chime in on this one as well.
I use a Fish Finder rig made with 180# test Bill Fischer swivel (stainless steel) 17" 40# mono slide leader for the fish finder slide and attached with a 180# Bill Fischer swivel another 17" floro leader snelled to a 6/0 circle Gamakatsu hook #208416.
This is just for clams the rig varies for bunker chunks.
Hope this helps

Don't worry, the fish don't carry rulers. And if they did, it would only be to make sure they aren't legal size yet. ;D

I always use mono coming off the fishfinder slide. Particularly when fluking. I make about a 8" loop and pass it through the eye and then pass it thru the eye of the sinker and around. (if that makes any sense ;D )

The way I am reading this; You are removing the sinker snap from the fishfinder and tying on a length of mono and putting the sinker on the other end of the mono, thus having your 8" length of mono between the sinker on the bottom and the fishfinder. Is that correct?

you got it, but i make a loop out of it with an overhand knot . I pass one end thru the eye and place the other end through making a larks head knot and again with the tag end to the sinker.
