Hello, my name is Brian and I am new to the wonderful sport of saltwater fishing. I am an avid angler in the fresh water, but I have decided to bramch out. I plan on trying this weekend ant the Ocean City - Longport Fishing Pier. I was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on what bait and equipment to bring with me. I have purchased a 10' okuma and i also have an 8' diawa surf rod. But that is as far as I have gotten in the equipment part. Any help and tips would be greatly appreciated. Also my girl friend wants to learn too so any pointers for teaching her would be great too. Thank you

Welcome Aboard Fisherfiend. Nice to have you aboard. Well right now it is fairly slow but it will pick up as the summer progresses. At first it is best to keep it simple gut the right tackle is key. I would suggest that your sinkers be the pyramid type as they will hold the best there. Anywhere in the 3 to 5 oz range. Hooks I would recommend would be the 3/0n to 6/0 circle hook. You can pick these pre tied up at any bait & tackle shop.
Bait at this time of year would be clams, bunker chunks, and herring on the ocean side. It is a little early for plugs but I have heard that they are starting to catch blues and stripers on artificials.
I would stick to the bait if I were you. The poles you have are okay for pier fishing no need to get anything else. I am not sure how far that pier is off the water but see if the pier has a net to use if you do get a fish if not you will have to winch the fish over the rail, make sure your line if strong enough to to that.
Good luck in your outing. I hope this helps
Again Welcome Aboard.
Happy Catching

nope didnt even get a nibble. Saw some tog being pulled over the rail but nothing else. Went out this past weekend 5/1 & 5/2 and pulled a 34#er from the 80th st. wall in Sea Isle City. My first saltwater striper. It was a blast pulling that thing in. Now all I have to do is put my girlfriend on them so she can get one. She has fun catching skates so, I know she will love pulling in a 30+ inch striper. Looking to get back out in 3 weeks when I have another weekend off. Sorry no pics of the striper. Forgot the camera. Rookie mistake wont happen again. 5hrug
