Title: Do-It-Yourself Eisenglass Repair
Post by: Fishin Dude on April 27, 2010, 09:51:05 PM
Another project I recently completed was replacement of my 2 side panels of isinglass.

I purchased 2 yards of 20 Gauge Double Polished Vinyl glass , this is the exact stuff : http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|5948|296197|314199&id=107205 (http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|5948|296197|314199&id=107205)

I removed the stitches with a pocketknife, then carefully cut out the old glass. I used the old glass as a pattern and traced it onto the new glass, then cut it out with scissors.

I then sewed the new glass back in by hand (no, I don't have a sewing machine in the house). I used polyester thread and a sewing palm to help push the needle. I guess you could use a thimble, but I don't have one of those either.

Only a few hours work, done while watching TV,  and I have two new side panels. Saved a pretty penny in the process, and was not stuck waiting on the canvass guy for weeks. Total cost was $25 and I have enough left over glass to do them again when I need to. When my front windshield needs replacement(I still have a few seasons left in it), I'm going to do that one myself too.

I was told after my project that the canvass shop sews in the new piece first, then cuts out the old one. Maybe I'll try that next time. I'm not a professional, just a "Redneck Repairman", and my way came out pretty good. If you need new glass and don't want to spend a lot of money, I suggest giving it a try. <'((((><
