Title: GPS C-MAPS
Post by: lwhssh on June 22, 2010, 09:11:16 PM
I have a Standard Horizon 180 GPS Chart Plotter. Is it worth buying the C-Map upgrade ($180.00)
I fish around Sandy Hook. Will this give me wreck or fishing locations. I'm seldom beyound 6-6 miles from the hook. Any opinions?

i personally dont see any reason to upgrade,,, really what are you gonna get out of it? notta,,,

except for maybe a new wreck that went down in the last couple years, and not a reef wreck.

detailed reef info can be had off nj's wildlife site, to include gps #'s

First, in answer to your specific question, I don't know. have not tried the CMAP.

In general, the tip of the Hook changes quite a bit over time. Sandbars lengthen or shorten, shoals form where there was deeper water. Updated charts are prudent from a safety perspective. The (what you may see as relatively high) upgrade cost would be recoup'd by just one "incident" avoided.

Or, best of both worlds, get an updated paper chart- cheaper, up-to-date, and little likelihood of it crapping out like marine electronics do sometimes....
