Never underestimate the power and strength of a piece of bamboo!!!  Most likely a piece of "Calcutta bamboo" (dendrocalamus strictus).  Semi-solid poles with a fast taper.  Want some?  We got it up to 19' lengths.  I'd love to see someone make a surf rod out of one!

That fish didn't even get a chance to fight. Never seen a pole used like that.
