Bob G and I went to the state house today to sit in on the committee vote on releasing the free salt water fishing registration for New Jersey to a full senate vote.
The bill passed the committee with only the committee chairman voting against the free registration. All others voted for the free registration to be brought up for a full senate vote.
The DEP vice-chair? recommended a $5 fee attached to the registration saying it was needed to cover the expenses of running such a program. Personally, I don't know why it would cost $5 for the state government to gather everyones name, address and phone contact number as this is all that they need for the registry as I understand it. 5hrug
Some committee members (Linda Greenstein in particulat) asked how the $5 fee was arrived at and the DEP guy did not have a very good answer basically saying it would cost between $2-4 per registrant. Having no basis for the $5 fee Greenstein voted yes for no fee. She did indicate that she would vote for a fee if she was provided with a basis for that fee.
There were quite a few representatives from fishing organizations including Adam Nowalsky among others. All were ready with papers in hand ready to speak on why we do not need a fee for the registration. None were provided an oportunity to speak with the committee chairman stating that it was descussed at previous sessions and there was no need for more discussions.
We now need this to come to a vote by the full senate and we will have a free registration in place that confirms to the federal requirements.
