Post by: rugman on March 29, 2011, 10:03:20 AM
I have to update mine .Should I wait to see what happens? They were saying they are going to do away with the $15.00 ! I pay way to much to N.J as it is .

Until a registry is in place and approved by the feds you still need to pay the money. There have been reports of conservation officers checking......so its up to you but beware that this year they aren't going to give warnings like they did last year

Not so sure if they will be giving warning or not. To my knowledge they still don't have a penalty in place if you don't register. So... 5hrug

If you are not going to be fishing for a while, just wait. If nothing happens with the NJ registry by the time you are going to fish you can always register online with the feds, pay the $15 ransom and print out a temp card.

5hrug...don't know either Joe but I say this because of the below story:

Have a friend, Phil, who was at oyster 2-3 weeks ago. He had a CO approach him. Phil wasn't fishing at this time but the CO asked him if he was doing any fishing today and Phil replied yes. The CO then asked him if he had his registration card. Phil does but did not have it with him at the time. The CO then stated since I personally did not see you fishing then I can not fine you. The CO also stated to Phil make sure you have it from now on if you don't want to get fined and then walked away from him.

I wish I was there with Phil because I could've asked the CO the details of this fine. I know, it sounds confusing...how can the Fish & Game say they are going to fine you if there is no penalty written? The CO reminds me of a gun-ho rookie cop  ;D

So, with that said, if the COs out there are "walking the beat" with this mentality I say better safe than sorry and just register...I'm sure if someone gets fined with no penalty written it would be thrown out of court but I have better things to do with my time.  ;D

What was the penalty, if there ever was one, prior to the bill being passed..just a warning, right? I mean when we (NJ Residents) registered free of charge in 2010 for "federal requirement" reasons I recall if you were stopped by a "fish cop" while fishing without a register number a warning was issued? If that is the case wouldn't it be status quo until the program is in place? I can't remember, a little help ;D.......

Frank, it will be when the DEP gets around to writing it up.

TB Joe, what the CO did was probably just a tactic that he uses to get people to comply. As we both know, an officer can not fine people. The officer simply writes up the violation and the court (judge) fines the violator.  t^

Is this what you're referring to?  Is this just for fishing off the surf?

That is it, yes. Also needed for fishing on private boats.

If you fish rxclusively on federally permitted charter and party boat it is not needed as the boat captain will provide the info to the feds.

If you signed up last year for free you are registered for one year from the time you signed up. Check your card for an expiration date.

When NJ eventually get's it's act together and puts the registration together you should be able to sign up for free.
