Hey Guys,
I have been reading on a couple of different sites about chumming for flounder and I see alot of ideas out there... I see alot of..CHUM CHUM CHUM and add more CHUM and then CHUM some more.. after your done CHUMMING, then CHUM some more...
Let me give you something to think about. If I bring out 25 pounds of chum and you bring out 25 pounds of chum and Catfish brings out 25 pounds of chum and EVERYBODY on the river / bay or where ever you are brings out a ton of chum, whats going to happen? Think about it for a second...
How big is a flounders belly? How much chum can they eat BEFORE they take your bait?
I'm not saying, not to chum.. you have to, it's a must. I will be chumming.. When you do chum use your chum to what it is supposed to do, attract fish to your boat / dock and then catch fish using a good healthy bait. Don't overload the water with all sorts of eats for the fish to eat and then you have to leave them there because their not eating.
What I am saying is not right or wrong, it's just something to think about! Hopefully you will catchem up either way you chum!

I thought I had that situation late fall this year.. 6-7 of us all lined up in grassy channel pumping the water with chum....
I try to stick to small and smelly pieces. I try to lure them not feed them. When the tide is ripping I place my pot right off the back in the moving water.. it tears it up pretty good and sends off tiny pieces that make it through the screen.
All in all I agree not to over chum..

couldn't agree more but there are times when boats dint put out enough to hold the fish ,I went on a boat last year and they only put one pot out and the mates friends were all around it.so I have had bad experiences w/ flounder on head boats

I hear ya Catfish.. Again, you HAVE to chum... It is a must. Chances or catching fish are 100 times better by chumming over not chumming.
When I worked on the Norma K flounder fishing a few years ago with Capt. Andrew Szanto, he was a chum nazi! He tought me soooo much about it and how important it is and the way to use it. I remember him saying,"not to much, not to little, make it perfect, hit the sash!"

For the guys who make thier homemade chum, like myself, they have to becareful how much they use. Dropping semi frozen pots that defrost rapidly will put alot of food in the water. For the guys who drop frozen chum logs in pots, 8 pots at a time is an over kill. As the chum logs defrost, they will dispence pieces of clam, corn and other ingretients into the water. 8 pots in the water is overboard.
Flounder are not like bluefish. They will feed to fill and shut down. Blues will eat / puke / eat / puke so on so forth.

I run 2 pots on my boat ,I try to make them last so I tape my pot up half way so I dot loose all at once ,I use anywhere from 2-3 small logs per hour

I run two pots aswell. I will position them according to how the boat sits with the current..
The tape idea is a pretty good one. If the pot has big openings, that advise is priceless. I try to find pot with smaller openings.

I make my own logs so they tend to have some smaller pieces in them so I use the tape ,I use my wifes blender to chop up the bellies then add to it

Hi Cap
I'll be on the Angela Rose flounder charter on Saturday. What bait are we using? Mussels, clams, bloods? What size sinkers should we bring? I haven't fished your waters so I'm not sure of currents and depths. Last year in the Raritan, I was gettiing away with 1/2 ounce and then we switched to 45 feet of water and I was using 4 and 5 oz.

Do you tell your wife about the use of her blender.........? LOL
Be sure to wash the blender before using you don't want to spoil your chum.
I had to this time she came home and emptied the dish washer and asked why it was in there ;D
