Title: Elusive Tuna Report
Post by: Chicken of the Sea on August 18, 2011, 10:47:50 AM
Left Sr inlet at 0100 with a crew of Doug, Ethan, Neil and Gary for a shot at the tuna. Arrived on the 30 line and realized I had a steering issue, no steering! The nut on the hydraulic ram on the port motor backed out and all of my steering fluid was running into the Atlantic. Fortunately, I was able to make the repair and had extra fluid on board and we were back in business in about 10 minutes. Breaking down 70 miles off in the dark with not another boat on the radar sucks! Made our way to Texas Tower area and started throwing meat - had 2 shark bites that took the hooks off. Sun came up and we trolled all over the area making our way to the Baccardi in what could only be called a "lifeless" ocean. No birds, no turtles, no whales, no bait and no fish. Ran further north looking for something good and never found it. Did manage to catch about a dozen decent mahi to put some meat in the boat. Covered over 200 nm and burned 150 gallons of fuel - some expensive mahi. God Bless Our Troops!

We passed through the Princess area on the way out - marked lots of bait but water was dirty and green - green in Chicken also - not much bait marked there. Guys who fished the Princess yesterday got pounded by the bluefish.
