Title: Fresh water Baracuda
Post by: Kenny on September 08, 2011, 05:43:12 PM
Due to the weather and lack of my fishing/reports I thought I’d report on a fishing trip I had with my son a couple of weeks ago...

Well my son Brian’s 8th birthday was Aug 17th so I thought It was time to get him his first  “ big boy “ fishing pole and retire the Scooby doo push button model… Nothing fancy…just one of those $49.00 combo deals spooled up with some 8lb test…his Uncles had already gotten him a new tackle box filled with all the freshwater goodies…

The day after his birthday he was ready to give it a go… First we needed to do a few practice casts in the backyard with just a bobber to teach him how to cast a spinner as opposed to the push button style….took him about 5 minutes to get the hang of it….seems the kids a natural !!

We dug up some fresh worms in the backyard and then off to our spot up in Hacklebarney State Park where we’d fished many times before.
Did the worm bobber deal for bluegills as we had many other occasions but thought it was time to try for some bigger fish and since we had the new fishing pole now was a good time to give it a try.  I decided to tie on a small lead head with a rubber night crawler, made a cast and showed Brian how to work it and add a little life to the rubber worm then handed over the pole to see what he could come up with.

Not 5 casts later Brian hooks something big, I can tell by the bend in his new pole…this isn’t a bluegill! Not 20 seconds into the battle the fish bites off the hook…Brian’s stoked now…A quick re-rig and see if we can get hooked up again….3 casts later he’s on!!  And comes unbuttoned just as fast….Well we re-rig and do this three more times even doubling up the line with the same results… but the last time we saw what was cutting our line….an 18 to 20” pickerel !!!

Getting dark now and Brian wants this fish bad but I tell him we can’t catch him with what we have in the tackle box tonight but I think I have something for this fish at home.

Back at the house I rig up the rod with a 3’ top shot of 20lb Power pro and tell my son we’ll go back the next day and see if that fish can cut this line.

Back at our spot and you guessed the rest….My son hooks the beast and lands him in about 10 casts. He is truly amazed at the size of the beast…He asks me what we’re going do with his fish? I tell him that we are going take his picture and put him back in the water so that we can catch him another day…and we will!!

There truly is nothing like taking your kids fishing!!
