No matter what boat you select they are going limit the number of people for tuna fishing. The Sea Devil at 18 is plenty big.

I will get a hold of Capt Bob to find out what dates he his in October and how much of a deposit he needs to hold the boat for us. I will let everyone know.

I spoke with Cindy of the Sea Devil and here is the scope.
We can pick any date in October 2012 that we want. I have to send in a $1000.00 Deposit by April first. As soon as we have the date picked, she will hold it for us. Full payment is due one week before we go.
They can take 20 but 2 WILL NOT have a bunk. The fee for the last 2 is 300.00 per man. The Capt my throw in free rod rentals for those who need them.
I guess we need to find a date first.
-
Being that this is a ( two ) day trip Rick I would want to know from the guys what their preference is with respect to either a Fri-Sat or Sat-Sun trip...
I think most guys would go for the Sat-Sun trip being that it may be difficult getting to the boat by 4pm on a work day ( Friday )
Possible 2012 Dates would include:
The weekend of Sept.29-30th
The weekend of Oct 6-7th
The weekend of Oct 13-14th
I vote for the weekend of either Sept 29-30th or Oct 6-7th and a Sat departure returning Sunday t^
What about the rest of you guys??
-
If it has to be a weekend, I prefer a Fri-Sat trip at the end of Sept. t^
I will not be able to go if it turns out to be the weekend of Oct 13-14th.
-
I can't do Sept.

Two important questions.
1.) What's a work day? ;D
2.) Does the moon phase have any play in the bite? If so, plan around that also. 5hrug

Sat-Sun is best but with a years notice I can do a Fri-Sat. I suggest Mid-Oct. There always seems to more be hurricanes in September, though Oct is hurricane season too.

No issues with that here,

Question: If the boat can take twenty, shouldn't Bayonne and Carl be in and not alternates?
I agree Bob...let's make the list 20 and build alternates from there...20 guys...85 foot boat = Plenty of room
As far as sleep Al....a buddy of mine does 3 trips a year on that boat ( raves about it by the way )...6 hour ride out (Hudson Canyon) that's when you sleep...fish all night and sleep on the way back in t^
Very cool that the boat is waving the 20 dollar rod rental fee for those without offshore gear t^
Rick PMed me and said he was going to cook all the meals on this trip TT^ TT^ TT^ rofla

Any word on having braid on the jigging rods? Would suck to have to reline my reels for one trip.
-
September, October, Friday/Saturday, Saturday/Sunday,any dates between the 1st and 31st, I'm still in.
BigAl, sometimes it's easier getting forgiveness than getting permission, other times it's the other way around. There is always a way to talk your way out of anything, such as: "Gee Honey, I thought it would be very romantic if I actually went and caught you Maguro(tuna) for Sushi and Shashimi myself. You're so special that you deserve only the freshest Maguro (Tuna) available on our anniversary. And by the way, you are way hotter then Wasabi I've ever had!" ;D I'm sure it will work out somehow. <'((((><

Sure Kenny I will cook. We are having Sushi. I will bring a knife and everyone can have some of my fish.

Doesnt matter to us any date and day.......Sleep on a boat??? Are we goona bring comfy chairs to? j/k
-
Any day of the week will work for me, I have lots of vacation time. Also any day of the month works too. I have nothing planned that far out.
-
I spoke with Cindy of the Sea Devil about the moon phase and her logs don’t really show a difference. She did tell me that 2008, 2009 and 2010 the fishing was poor. In 2011 they had many limits with three trips back to back to back with limits. That’s 3 yellow fins per man. She can’t say why it changed so much. She did mention did the oil spill in the gulf move the fish up or just different currents. Don’t know why or what will happen next year.
So with that said I think we should pick a date and go from there.
-
Like i said b4 any day any time for us..... t^
-
A buddy of mine just fished this past Sunday Monday overnighter on the Sea Devil on the full moon.....Caught their limit and were back at the dock early 5hrug
-
Well, if it can't be September, I vote for the first available date in October.
-
Any word on having braid on the jigging rods? Would suck to have to reline my reels for one trip.
only if jigging, must be topped off with 100 yds mono.
-
Yea. that's not happening... I'll give um 10 Yards..
-
So who is leading this negotiation? Capt. opens with 100yds and Hotrod counters with 10.... ;D
-
anyone running this when is a deposit due by and to were i see open boats $325 so whats 20 man come out to for chater as for bunks im sure not everyone is sleeping for 6 hours bunks can be shared
-
Bayonne.....no date picked and or money due...Rick started this thread as an exploratory look at the interest level for a NJSWF tuna trip next fall similar to our annual tog trip....Rick is running this trip t^
I would say early to mid June we would be revisiting this and picking a date ....my guess is the money would be due after we get the date nailed down...
Hope this helps....
And by the way...I passed on it but your Gona take some heat for the " sharing bunks " comment rofla rofla

sounds good hanks for he reply cant wait t^

-
No bunk needed here either
-
Why do some people make the no braid rule??? is it that big of a deal?
-
Don't understand that one either
-
A couple of reasons for the the no braid rule...
When you have 20 guys fishing for tuna on a party boat and the bite gets hot..a good number of fish get lost at the side of the boat with lines getting crossed up...I guy fishing mono with a fish on can get cut off in an instant with a guy fishing next to him with braid...Mono = more fish landed...
Not to mention how hard it is to untangle braid vs mono....
I understand you can bring a setup for mahi rigged with braid aboard the Sea Devil...But not your tuna rig...Maybe Rick can confirm that with Cindy...
Hope this helps........
-
Will do
-
Now I see. Thanks for the explanation. I've never fished for tuney fish b4.
-
t^
-
Ok was just wondering!
-
I was told that Capt. Bob does not like braided lines, but if you have it on your reels he won't stop you from fishing with it.
-
if there are two open spots at anytime please let me know... thanks guys

I was told that Capt. Bob does not like braided lines, but if you have it on your reels he won't stop you from fishing with it.
Strike that. Just heard from another guy who was out last week. He said he used braid with 150' of mono top shot. But, another guy on the trip had braid with an 8' leader and was told to use a boat pole.
-
I have 3000 yards of 65# Mono Bob.. looks like we'll be re-spooling for this one nosmly
-
I would think that we should be able to make the braid/mono decision ourselves being that we are a charter not an open boat trip... 5hrug

I to will most likely rent a rod. Altho i might bring one of mine... :headscra:

OK Guys,
If we are going to do this trip, we need to come up with a date. We have to send in a deposit with a date in April.
Lets come up with a date in Oct
Then see who is in and who is out.
Then we will need $100.00 per man so we can hold the date.
Vote for the day here:

Still Running Rick earlier posted a thread (http://njsaltwaterfisherman.com/forums/index.php?topic=24594.0) for a tuna trip for the fall of this year (2012) October got the vote for the month. This poll is for the day...
Vote on the date(s) that you would be available/prefer to make the trip. You can vote for as many days as you can make. The date with the most votes will take preference to the other dates (depends on availability of vessel).
All dates are for a Saturday trip, assuming a Friday late night departure. Again, depending on availability of the vessel.
-
t^ Thanks Joe

-
Ok here is what we have to work with.
We can accommodate 10/6 to 10/7 or 10/19 to 10/20/2012.
The charter rate is $6700 for 20 passengers
Plus a minimum of 10% gratuities.
A $1000 deposit is due to hold the date.
Balance is payable in installments: $2000 due in July; $2000 in August, the
balance 1 week before sailing date.
So we need to have the date and then $50.00 from each person to hold the date.
Then $100.00 from everyone by July and the same for August.
-
If Captain Bob cancels due to weather, you may receive 100% refund or reschedule, if you find a date. our choice.
-
I think the full moon is Oct 1st or 2nd....the 6th or 7th we would be coming off it...like that weekend the most ....u will have my 50 at the party!

I know there was some talk about the captain throwing in free rod rentals. Is this a definite? Also, what rods & reels will they provide?
-
Check Rick's last post (three posts up), says rod rental is included. You are overworked Bob, you need some time off. ;D

Oh, and disregard my post about what rods & reels they are providing. I just read it when I clicked on the link.

OK, two more things...
1. The boat says a minimum $50 tip for the mates is expected. That would make it $390 per person. No? :headscra:
2. The October schedule shows them doing four consecutive trips that weekend, leaving on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Do you know if Capt. Bob is definitely on this trip? I hope so.

That is our date, but I don't know he is driving the boat.
10% tip is included in the money you are giving me. The price $7370.00 that includes 10% tip for the mates. Please feel free to tip the mates more if you see fit.
See rod and reel below

Just a heads up guys, I need the next payment of $100.00 per person this month. I have to have the check to them by July 1st.
If you paid me more then the $50.00 the last time, I have that info and you only need to send the difference if it was less then the $100.00 due.
Please make sure you put your user name in the memo area. The last time most of the checks had Tuna trip written in the memo and it’s a pain in the butt trying to keep track of who paid. So please put you username on the check.
Please mail your payment to:
Harrick International
PO Box 2364
Oak Ridge, NJ 07438
You can make the check out to cash or Rick Carroll.
Either way is fine.
Thanks
Rick

Guys,
If we don't send in our scheduled payment to the captain a.s.a.p. we will lose the boat! rgmn Rick cannot (and should not) put the money out for those who are late.
If you have not sent your payment that was due in June, please send it today. If you have already sent it, thank you. Either way, please let Rick know what's going on.
Our payment for the trip was due on July 1st. Let's not lose our spot. This trip will be epic! clp
-
I sent mine again after the mishap also included a check dated for aug 1st so Im not late on the next one. The reason i asked about the rod rental it says on the first page not included

Since we took the whole boat the Capt is throwing in free rod rental for anyone who wants on.

Here's the down and dirty on who owes what per Rick's last update on June 30th...
Reel McCoy........2nd payment ( $100 )
Capt Carl............2nd payment ( $100 )
Big..I can't find a stamp..Al...2nd payment ( $100 ) ;D
Fellinger...........2nd payment ( $100 )
Duffman & Guest....Original deposit of $50 X2 ($ 100 ) plus the 2nd payment of $100 X2 ( $200 ) Total of $300
Let's get those checks in the mail ASAP !!
And pm..email or call Rick and let him know your status...PM me if you need his number...
He's working hard to put this together for us...
I don't want to loose our locked in date because we missed a payment to the boat nosmly
That second installment was due 3 days ago !!!
Let's go !!!!!
-
Might be time to open the "non payed up spots" to other members, as not to loose our trip, and to also keep up Rick's, as well as NJSWF.COM's credibility within the local charter community. Maybe like, whom ever gets the money in first gets the spot at the rail? Just my 2 cents worth. 5hrug
-
This thing is getting to be like work.
Everyone who has not paid has told me the payment is on the way in one way or the other.
The problem here is the boat wanted the payment July 1st. I still don’t have all of the money. I posted on June 1st about this dead line and I am still waiting on money. Keep in mind you have to mail the check to me. I have to put it in the bank to clear and then send a check to the boat, this all takes time.
So here is what we are going to do.
I am going to get a hold of the Capt and ask him if we can change the payment around a little. I will ask if we can make the payment in full with no other payments before that. I will ask if we can pay in full by the July 31st.
That means I need payment in full from each member by July 21st.
So what I need to know from everyone is are you in or are you out and can you have me the payment in full by July 21st? I need to know this by this Saturday July 7th. I am not going to call the captain till the 7th. If we fall below 18 guys I will cancel the trip and everyone will loose the $50.00 deposit you gave me unless the capt. sends it back to me.
That money has been sent to the boat. As far as the other payments everyone has sent me I will mail it back to you, since I still have your checks. Also if we are a go and everyone agrees with what I said above that’s great, but if I don’t have payment in full by the 28th I will not send in any money and cancel the trip.
So please post up if you are good with this or not.
The total for the trip is $368.50
You know how much you sent me and I would need the balance by the 28th
As Darren said I think it reflects on all of us. I have never paid a deposit on a charter fishing trip, but I always showed up. I know things come up and you may have to back out, but it’s not right that guys trying to make a living looses.
Or option 2.
Someone else wants to take this over and I will call the Captain and change the name on it and mail all of the checks to you.
Either way I am good with it.
-
I am in. You will have the $168.50 to you by the end of the week.
-
$$ on the way Rick.
-
:headscra: How did we manage to schedule this on my anniversary. fcp. This is going to cost me big time....
-
No way I will have the balance by the end of this month. nosmly
I think the way you had it worked out was good. I just think the due dates could have been earlier so we didn't have to run up against it when the payments were late.
I would suggest that all who are paid through June need to have their July payment in by the 15th. That way if someone forgets to put a stamp on their envelope ::) they will still have time to get their installment in before the next payment is due.
-
whs Sorry you are going thru this Rick..
-
I'm in buddy! Sorry for your troubles and thank you for organizing this trip
-
$200 in the mail. Sorry...
-
Late to the party as myself and my buddy just came off the alternate list.
Been in touch with Rick and payment is on its way.
I'm good with whatever everyone decides is best with the rest of the money.
How about keeping the next installment as is, then balance of trip due end of August? Never liked the idea of balance due at boat as a few no shows can leave others holding the bag.
Looking forward to meeting and fishing with everyone.
-
I suggest name tags!

I agree with that. But would rather see the balance due a little later, like September 15th.
-
spt for the balance works better for me also
-
Okay, here is how I feel about it:
First, Rick, thanks for everything you have done for this trip, none of this is your fault, I understand your position and I'm sure your are fed up with the lack of responsibility that has been shown by a few members here. I personally could not do it. I've got to buy you a drink for your troubles. chrz
Second, I have no trouble paying my balance by July 21st, but for others, as some have indicated, it might not fit into their planned budget. To change the rules after the game has started seems totally unfair.
Third, If we are changing the rules, how about those who promised, but did not pay, are banned from ALL future NJSWF.COM fishing trips, from posting on the site, and we post deadbeat alerts about them on the web. Seems harsh, yes, but hey, they don't feel bad about screwing everyone else on the trip. I'm sure some are off limits to criticism, for obvious reasons, but those of us who have played by the original rules, support our sponsors, and responsibly met our obligations, could be being played for fools. Sorry, but after all of Rick's effort into this, for us to loose $900 in deposit money, does Pee me off.
Forth, If I have offended anyone, pay up. smk
-
We're all friends here. grtn Stuff happens. I'm sure that's the case here. Let's just get this squared away and, hopefully, we won't have any more problems going forward.
Thank you Rick for your organization, patience and leadership putting this trip together. t^
-

No way honey, I did NOT forget our anniversary. I don't know if you realize that even in the finest of shushi bars, they serve previously frozen fish that has traveled around the globe. You, the greatest woman on the planet, deserve only the freshest tuna available during our anniversary weekend, that which comes directly from the sea, never having been frozen. And with everyone knowing how special you are to me, 17 of my friends have decided to give up their time with their families and loved ones to help me in this unselfish task . I'm doing this all for you Honey, because I love you.
Trust me, this should work, I've only been divorced once. ;D

Just received an e-mail from the Captain, he would like to know how many rods we will need.
I see this is going to be a pain to try to keep track of who wants a rod and who doesn’t. So I am going to figure a rod for everyone unless you post that you don’t need one.
Remember you can only use Mono.
Our trip includes rods, bait/tackle & fish cleaning services that are not include if this were an open trip.
Thanks

I am curious what rod/reels the guys are bringing with them. Also what tackle should we be bringing with us, Hooks, sinkers, leaders, jigs, rods for smaller fish, etc.... This is my first time on this type of Tuna trip... Thanks.

Dan that a really good question.
1) Two standup rods with 4/0 60lb Ande
2) Standup with AVET LX with 50lb Ande
3) Custom made (In progress) Seeker GTS 60H with Accuratize Penn Jigmaster with 50Lb Ande.
4) Tsunami Airwave with Avet MLX 30Lb ande
5) Tsunami Airwave with Avet SX 20Lb ande
Remember this is for Jake and Me.
Squid Jigs
10 oz Diamond Jigs
This is where I need help - on the hooks, swivles, jigs.

Rick.. Can you ask him what type of reels he's renting..
Took this right off the Sea Devel's website..
8. s5r NO SPIDERWIRE OR OTHER MULTI-FILAMENT LINE ALLOWED ON BOARD. Harnesses are frowned upon. If necessary we can provide and help you to use a gimble belt. If you have any questions about appropriate and/or permissible gear, please do not hesitate to call, 732 701-1094, and ask, rather than spending money on something that will not work.
9.For $15 you may rent a rod from us. All bait and tackle is included with this. We use Penn 6/0 rods with the appropriate pound test line for the fish that we have been catching.
-

ALOT of my usual aresenal will be staying in the rack at home. ALL of my jigging stuff is loaded with braid. Reels are too small to switch them over to mono and I wont have the capacity I need on them.

Penn International 50 on a Penn Tuna stick, 80lb mono for sword dropping.
Penn International 30 on a Chaos chunk rod, 60 lb mono for tuna chunking.

Rick.. Can you ask him what type of reels he's renting..
Penn 6-0 reels Like Kenny said.
Also for those who would like to know:
The legal limit of yellowfin is 3/person. So 20 anglers 2 crew & captain is 23
people. The boat can keep 3 times 23 or 69 yellowfin.
Only 1 bluefin per boat and long fin has no limit, so you can keep catching long fin.

Just got off the phone with Cindy of the Sea Devil.
I spoke to her about bringing Spinning rods for casting for mahi-mahi and could we use braid on the rods.
The answer was yes we can. t^
So my next question I have for you guys is what’s your thoughts on using a Trevala 66m spinning rod with a bait runner 3500 for the mahi?

combo will work fine.
Just personal preference on the mahi setups....I prefer mono. As the guys who have done this before know, pulling up on a marker buoy for mahi can be chaotic (organized chaos I should say). 20 guys casting to a pot, then hooking up gets a little nuts. Line always cross and I'd rather be able to cut and retie in seconds rather than deal with braid. Just my.02

Rick.. Is is my understanding that this will basically be a chunking trip with all tackle provided.. Is that correct? yes if people want to jig they will need to bring their own jigs.. My question is If I bring my own chunking rod.. will I be responsible for the Hooks if I loose one. I would think no. right?
So if you are getting a rod from them. you shouldn't have to worry about tackle.. none of us should.. I would think..
Also If you never fished for Tuna I wouldn't worry
We will set up on the chunk. Your bait with go in the water
and we hope a tuna will eat it : ). The only thing I can stress to those
That never had the chance to fight a tuna. Is its not like a big Striper. These fish won't get to the boat untill they are tired. So it is a fish against drag game.
When Eddie hooked the yellow fin on the phyliis Ann
And I could see the panic in his eyes from the screeming drag
I said. Relax. He isnt coming in untill he's ready.

Reprot from the Sea Devil.....
The Sea Devil from Point Pleasant reported the same thing Sunday, with limits of blues over 10 pounds on both jigs and bait. Capt. Bob Pennington ran the Sea Devil to Hudson Canyon Friday to fish into Saturday in 580 feet of 77 degree waters. Joe Abraimo (17) fought a tuna for two hours before a 225-pound bigeye was boated. Jigging didn't work, but bait provided a pick of yellowfin tuna in the 40-to-60-pound class until a single albacore was the last tuna caught in the morning. Pennington sails to the canyon again Thursday night
-
Yes.. Jigging will only be preferred to those that like to do it.. Much easier watching bait ;D Now Bob.. he will be on the bow Jigging and popping his ass off ;D

(A 23-hour day aboard the Sea Devil, tuna fishing)
The Sea Devil sails for tuna fish, not only for the thrill and excitement of the catch, but for the adventure of sailing from ninety to one hundred ten miles offshore! When that big tuna fish is hooked, it fights like few other species of fish. The challenge and excitement of getting that fish on the boat, once it is hooked, is an experience that one does not want to miss.
NJ Tuna fishing is more exciting than New Jersey blue fishing because while blue fish may weigh up to fifteen pounds, the tuna will weigh from twenty-five pounds to over one hundred pounds! Most of the fish we catch weigh from fifty to eighty-five pounds. On occasion we have seen anglers land swordfish that weigh from sixty pounds, up to two hundred fifty pounds! Often times we catch mahi-mahi that weigh up to twenty pounds.
A typical offshore excursion aboard the Sea Devil begins before we leave the dock, after you have put your belongings on the boat and Captain Bob calls all passengers onto the dock so he can review procedures with you and also to explain how fishing has been on the most recent trips.(View Offshore Fishing procedures).
Once Bob is finished reviewing procedures, he will call you out, in the order in which we received payment from you, to board the boat and pick out your bunk. At that time Cindy collects for any rental rods fees that have not been paid. By 5 p.m. the Sea Devil sets sail.
Let the crew be aware if it is your first time sailing offshore. Even if you fished for tuna in the past, the crew will check the drag on all lines. (A drag too tight may snap and you lose the fish.) A crew member will explain and demonstrate for each new angler, how to use the rod to successfully catch tuna. Listen carefully and ask him to repeat anything you are not sure of. Follow his instructions and when you hook into that big tuna and you will be ensured more success in getting that fish on the boat. (Learn how to catch a Tuna Fish) One does not have to be strong to catch a tuna; It is all in the technique.
Once all rods have been examined, many anglers will use this time traveling to the canyon, to eat and get some sleep. It could be up to six hours before the boat will reach it’s destination at the Hudson Canyon, or further south. A good sleep should leave you refreshed and alert. Once the anchor is set fishing begins! This could be as early as 11:30 p.m. Once the anchor is set it is time to wake up and begin to fish! For best success you will fish right through the evening and through daybreak.
On a clear night, some passengers forgo their bunk below and bring the sleeping bag to the upper deck to sleep under the stars! It is amazing how many more stars can be seen sailing offshore with no man made lights or buildings to block the vision. The Milky Way and many constellations are easily seen.
On the best of days, tuna and swordfish or mahi-mahi is caught almost immediately and a steady pick continues through the night until day break. On these great days, some anglers may land three yellow fin tuna by 2 a.m. and stop to rest. The tuna fish may entertain you by jumping and doing vertical dives five to six feet off the water! One customer described such a trip as "like something out of National Geographic." Others declared it was worth making the trip simply to see this show and catching the fish was secondary. Sometimes large schools of porpoises will swim alongside the boat. At other times, we may spot smaller schools of porpoises playing, jumping and diving in the distance, when we are anchored up.
Once your fish is on the boat, it is tagged, bled and kept below deck in an iced fish hold. This frees up space on the deck for more comfortable fishing. The boat has been known to leave early on some of these fantastic days of tuna fishing, simply because we had caught the legal limit. We will take a leisurely ride back to dock and weather permitting, many anglers will choose to rest on the upper deck and soak in some rays for the six hour ride home.
On the not so nice days, the weather may be overcast or a bit breezy. On these trips we suggest you rest up on the ride out to reserve energy for the fishing that will soon begin. If it is cloudy or raining, the cabin is a comfortable place for eating and to rest if you do not like the motion in the bunk room.
When we arrive and set the anchor we begin to fish. Since it is fishing we promise and not catching, we see some great days and other not so great days. We can promise that our professional crew will always work with you to hook up with and land those tuna fish, swordfish, mahi-mahi and many other fish we sometimes find. Our goal is to make this a safe and memorable trip for all.

Procedures for Tuna Fishing
The captain and crew aboard the Sea Devil maintain the highest safety standards and professionalism, in an effort to provide the best possible fishing adventure for all passengers. We go above and beyond U.S. Coast Guard requirements. Our goal is to provide an enjoyable trip so that you when you leave, the captain hears, "I am impressed with the boat and the entire operation; I had a great time, and I’m looking forward to returning with more friends!"
We are an 85 foot boat with 18 bunks and only carry up to 18 customers when we travel offshore. We will carry two to four crew members at all times. You will never feel overcrowded aboard the Sea Devil. If you are a first time offshore adventurer with us, it is important to know the following when you arrive at our dock.
When the boat is docked and your cars are properly parked in the lot, you are free to put your rods aboard. Only one rod at the rail at any time; extra rods may be placed above or forward in the rod holder. (This means we should never count more than 18 rods at the rail since we carry a maximum of 18 passengers.)
Once the boat is cleaned and the captain or crew gives permission, you may bring all your remaining belongings on board. Any large empty coolers may be left in your vehicle since we tag and bleed the fish immediately and store them in the iced fish holds below deck.
Approximately one half hour before departure, Bob will ask all passengers to gather on the dock and review what many refer to as the "riot act", which is basically a review of dos and don’ts aboard the vessel. Essentially, the following applies:
•Red lights in bunk stay on - Coast Guard Regulation. These lights allow you to move around and find the ladder to leave the bunk room whenever you want to do so.
•Smoking is allowed only on deck outside of the cabin and heads, on the lower or upper deck. Do not grind butts into the deck. Do not flush butts in the toilet.
•Coolers, tackle boxes and any hard plastic items are to be placed on the deck or under tables, or outside the cabin under the benches. The cushions are easily torn when these items are placed on them and are costly to repair. Do not place these items on the cushions.
•The microwave oven must be used properly by covering or wrapping food with paper towels, which we provide for you. Please clean up any spills. We pride ourselves on cleanliness. Remember liquids will spill when the boat is rolling. Please bring a thermos for coffee and the like and do not expect to heat liquids in the microwave when winds are strong.
•Please notice there is a recycling container in the cabin and a garbage can for all other waste in the cabin and another one on the outer deck. Please use them appropriately.
•Salt water is used to flush the heads. There is an unlimited supply. Please flush for as long as needed to empty the toilet. The pump will endure. If uncertain, keep flushing.
•There is a Limited supply of fresh water, from the faucets. Please use this water conservatively. Be certain the faucets are not jammed and running unnecessarily. If we run out of fresh water, we can not replenish until we are back at the dock.
•Bedding ONLY is allowed in the very dry, comfortable bunk room. This is a wooden boat with cloth covered cushions on each bunk. For everyone’s comfort, all personal belongings, tackle boxes, food, etc. remains above in the cabin. The bunk room is for sleeping only. Please leave any wet clothes and foul weather gear above in the cabin, including socks, boots and footwear. This is mandatory to maintain comfort for all.
•Should you feel ill, do not use the bunk room or stay in the cabin. Do not lock yourself in the head; do not vomit in the trash can, get sick over the side. This can only aid the chum slick and maintain comfort aboard the boat for all.
•Captain Bob Pennington has a reputation for maintaining the cleanest head boat on the east coast and takes great pride in this fact. Please cooperate by disposing of chewing gum and garbage appropriately.
Boat sails at 5, please make sure you are there atleast by 4:30

I will be trying to get one on the jig. clp But, I am also bringing some chunking stuff as well. Although I haven't chunked for tuna, I have for stripers and bluefish. And I definitely think there is skill involved in chunking. Those who do it right (right leaders, right size bait, hooked correctly, etc.) almost always catch more than others.
I have some 6/0 and 7/0 Gamakatsu 4X circle hooks and some 60 and 80 lb fluorocarbon. I just need to get some heavy duty Spro swivels and I'll tie up about a dozen rigs for this trip.

Thanks for the tip. t^ Do you try to hide the hook? In through the mouth and out the gill thing?
I like the mousetrp rig-10-11 hook -push hook in from the back center from tail fork and completely hide it and wrap the gills and mouth closed--I do this when have time and butterfish on hand before I go--takes too much time on a PB--Mouth gills is fine though-and use fine copper wire to hold the hook straight which holds the gills and mouth closed--If you understand that--wrap from hook tip towards mouth.
Good luck Bob

5' leaders. The Gamakatsus are offset. The Daiichis are non-offset.
I'm snelling the hooks. Since the eyes are inline (as opposed to a downturned or upturned eye) I normally wouldn't put the line through the eye. However, I have seen where some people put the line through the eye from back to front. I'm not sure if this is necessary and I'm thinking it can only weaken the line at the point of contact. Any thought on this? 5hrug

Thanks for the Heads Up on this seminar Reel McCoy. I got to fish yesterday, so I went to Effingers and attended this seminar this morning. The instructor, Brayden, has mated on quite a few head boats, and has many head boat tuna trips as a fisherman under his belt. He was very knowledgeable and a great speaker who put on a fantastic presentation complete with a slide show, actual bait rigging, fighting tactics, tangle strategy, hand outs and more. This was my first visit to Effingers and I was impressed. I got onto their email list, so I'll be notified of any future seminars. It was a nice morning, then I took my wife to the Festival of The Sea in Point Pleasant this afternoon, Ouch, damn near emptied my wallet. Glad the seminar was free.

Keep tieing!!!
Just a personal preference on my part, but even if using the boats rod/reel setup, I would still bring my own pre tied rigs.
If we happen into a mad dog bite, the last thing you want to do is wait around for a rig while the mates are busy tending to gaffing and help people fight fish.

I sent an email asking if they had a live well on board because a few people asked me and here is the reply.
"Hi Rick, we do not keep a live well; however we have light rods for snagging
squid and anyone can bring their own light rods. We catch squid & use it as
bait on each trip.
BP keeps a rod holder up forward that holds 40 rods, so no extra rods are at
the rails when fishing for tunas.
Thanks,
Cindy"

A 5 gallon bucket with a battery powered air pump should keep 6 squid alive for a while, plus you can always flush the bucket with the hose. Same for any live bait taken with sabiki rigs. I've got 1 bucket with a pump that I plan on bringing along.

Why not. If you flush it out with the hose every
15-20 minutes, it should keep some bait alive. 1 bucket is.not enough for 20 guys, a few will do. Even fresh dead is better than previously frozen bait.

We are just about a week away from this trip, make sure you have someone's cell number and someone has yours. This way if you are running late for some reason you can get a hold of us. We don't want to be sitting at the dock wondering if your running late or decided not to come. With that said try to be on time and ready to go.
If you need to back out on the trip please let us know ASAP.
You can pm me with your cell number. If you do just let me know if you do not receive texts. If I have to contact everyone I will send a text unless you don't get them, then I will call you.
We have to be at the boat at 4:30 for the captain to give his speech. Please try to be there by 4pm.
If you go to the web site it will answer all of your questions, so please check it out to see the do's and don'ts and what to and not to bring.
In you payment there was a small tip included for the mates, so of you feel the mate did a good job please give them an additional tip.
The rods, reels, bait, tackle and fish cleaning are all included for the trip. They are giving us chunking rod set ups, if you want to jig or cast that's up to you to bring the equipment.
Hope we get good weather and see everyone soon.

There are 20 of us. As stated in the beginning of this thread when we decided to go with 20 people, the last two to sign up have no bunk. As I see it dufman and capt Carl's guests are the guys without a bunk. I'm sure that doesn't mean they can't take turns.

Just pulled this off F/B recent Sea Devil trip 28/29th
Sea Devil Fishing Co.
Highlights from Sep 28-29: BP sailed to the Toms, and anchored up in about 650 feet of water. The bite did not begin until about 4 a.m. and lasted until about 6 a.m. There was much chaos and many anglers were hooked on tunas at the same time! All were yellow fins caught with bait. They ranged from 60 to 80 pounds. Many highlights include: Kudos to Chris Zotti, Ed Bannon, Nick Kapalski, Ray Bunn, and Craig Van Kott ! Each of these guys hooked into their 3 YFT limit! WooHoo! Craig was the first to land a tuna, and this was his first time out to the canyon. It was also a first for Ray Bunn. Jeff Camun was happy with his yellow fin catch. Dad, Bob McDermott, and son Justin both caught big tunas. Billy Burdge caught his first YFT for the season, as did David King, Oakland, CA. There were about a dozen that were lost in the battle, and lots of action!
-
For what its worth...and I'm the new guy here so dont want to step on any toes if anyone disagrees...some thoughts...
The beer talk is great, 6 pack per person, yada, yada...y'all know what ya can handle..I'm sure none of us have seen this enforced on a headboat unless someone got outta hand. I'm guessing we should be fine... ;D
On the fish share issue...let it play itself out. We may hammer the crap out of them, we may skunk up the place, we may end up somewhere in between. Lets see how it plays out before we talk about sharing the catch. I just dont think its neccesary to talk about splitting up fish before we actually have the chance to to do so.
My .02 for what its worth.
BTW, I prefer to eat what I catch before I get off the boat...will have soy and wasabi in the cooler.. ;D

Food for thought for anyone who is a subscriber to The Fisherman.
As of now, the current standings for the 2012 Dream Boat Challenge lists the smallest Yellowfin at 52.70 lbs., and Mahi Mahi at 14.75 lbs. Hey, you never know, if your on the board, you have a shot at the boat. pawle

Capt Bob will be fishing Thursday and Friday this week. Hopefully he will be on the fish so he can bring us right back to the same spot.
If in the event we have to cancel due to weather, they will text me to let me know and I will text everyone I have a phone number for. This could be as late as noon or 1pm. If you don’t hear from me, then we are a go. The way it looks right now, weather should not be a problem.

Word! With this group I'm not sure what's a safer position - on my back or on my stomach.
So, a couple serious questions for the virgins (ok, for me)...
1) If the boat leaves at 5pm what time does it arrive at the grounds usually?
2) What time does the boat return on Saturday? 5pm ish?
3) What should we bring for a cooler? Just something large enough for food and drink? I assume the fish that are caught are tagged, bled, and iced on the boat?
4) For clarification and rod used specifically for fish in the slick ie Mahi or shark can be braid?
-
1--4-5 hours
2--3-5
3--I bring 1 for food and drink--Keep 1 in vehicle for fish to take home or if enough romm at end of trip use food cooler
4--thay don' like braid--if fishing in the slick for mahi I would jig or use weighted feathers.
hope that helps

Just checked the website...
The bunk room is for sleeping only, NO DOCKING !!
-
I'll be there early! I want to get the closest bunk to the exit! :P

Ahhh, no I definitely want to keep it. It's good for when me and the Mrs have company, and given I used to pretty much mainline coffee like a crackhead there's always the good chance I fall off the wagon.

Just checked the website...
Approximately one half ;Dhour before departure, Bob will ask all passengers to gather on the dock and review what many refer to as the "riot act", which is basically a review of dos and don’ts aboard the vessel.
The bunk room is for sleeping only, NO DOCKING !!
So the red "mood lighting" light will stay illuminated during the trip in the Bunk Room. Anyone mind a few morning mist scented candles and my Barry White CD collection? :-* ;D
Just kidding of course. No worries t^
