Title: Morons in the fog
Post by: Maritime Matt on October 13, 2011, 09:39:24 PM
Every night when I come home from the marina, I switch on the vhf while I check my e-mails and phone messages. With the heavy fog tonight, I said to my wife, sure as heck I'll probably here some radio chatter about a sailboat lost in the fog in LEI. Yup, right again.
Call #1- Capt Rick from TowBoat U/S is on his way out to a sailboat. It gets better. The CG is on the phone with the boat owner relaying messages to Rick. Thats right. The moron has NO VHF RADIO aboard. The boat is up on the beach at the tip of Holgate with East winds, shallow water and fog. Rick says to the CG that with the unsafe conditions he will not put his boat at risk. I could not have said it better.

Call #2- CG makes a Marine Assistance Radio Broadcast about a lost boater at the 110 ICW marker at LEI, disoriented in the fog. The boat is a Neptune 20' center console. The CG has a cell phone # which they relay to SeaTow. You'll never guess. NO VHF Radio aboard.
These tow Capt's along with the CG are out in these foggy conditions assisting a couple of morons and they can't even communicate to them by VHF.
You just can't fix stupid. This stuff aggravates me. I wonder how fancy a cell phone they got.
No further comment.

Hopefully call #3 isn't from the guy who has his awesome GPS system so he can go WOT in the fog.

As long as the operator knows what he is looking at on the radar in the fog. There have been several boaters who beached their vessel at Shark River inlet because they were not aware of what the radar screen was showing them.

That is, the inlet jetties do not stick out from land the same distance. The north jetty sits back closer to land than the south jetty. HOWEVER, the fishing pier that is just south of the inlet sticks out the same distance as the south jetty giving the false appearance that this is the inlet. Several radar inexperienced boaters have mistaken the space between the south jetty and the fishing pier as the inlet. They have found out the hard way that the beach is between them two marks.  fcp

radar and gps will not save you in the fog when you hit that stump floating at the waterline

only slowing down will save you in the fog
