Peter, Dennis and I jumped on a party boat out of Belmar today. It was a Golden day for mackerel fishing.
We headed due east from the Shark River Inlet and motored about twelve miles or so. It was the type of day you wish you had some kids aboard so they could know what catching is all about.
Every drop the lines were loaded up. If you had seven hooks on (some did cfzd) you brought seven fish to the boat. Captain Jim kept us on the fish all day. We had some long drifts and acres of fish. We filled the two large coolers we brought and then filled a big tote for the mates.
If you need mackerel for bait for the up coming season or some mackerel for the smoker, now is the time to get out. You won't be disappointed.
Resting up this evening and will be several hours tomorrow tending to our catch.

Sounds like a fun day. t^

Nice day Joe clp
So how do you tend to your catch?
Do you bag and brine up different batches for the upcoming season?
Whole for shark, blues, etc?
Strips for fluke ?
Or is this food value catching?
Just wondering what the next step is.
Thanks. t^

Nice Joe, Lets get some Mako's and Threshers!! TT^

Nice trip Joe t^

Paul-e,
Peter will keep a couple of dozen for smoking.
The rest I will wrap in foil and freeze them. The foil seems to keep them fresher than plastic bags.
Most were of medium and smaller size and wouldn't be all that great for fileting and salting, which is what I really wanted to do with them. I will use some whole for sharks. The rest will be chunked for blues and fileted during the trips for fluke.

Nice report Joe t^

Thanks for the report. When does the mackerul usually end? I think it just might be worth a trip for some bait (and maybe an excuse to go fishing).
-
Should last for another week or two. I think it will depend on the weather when they get pushed out. Get out there now if you're looking to fill the freezer with bait. t^

Are all of boats out of there fishing mackeral now?
-
Only 2, Golden Eagle and Miss Belmar. Ocean Explorer is bottom fishing.

I tried to get out today with some budds. Of course no one was available on last minute notice. It's ok, I was at PARX Casion too long last night anyway.....

Peter just dropped off some mackerel that he smoked. Will have to give them a taste during the super bowl game when the Pats whoop azz on the G-men. ;D
(That ought to get a rumble from the North Jersey crowd) :-*
Just teasing guys, enjoy the game tonight. My Steelers will be watching from the bleachers. :P

Well.. I bailed on this morning.. was feeling the effects of 10 hours at the rail yesterday.. that cold stiff NE wind that I woke up to kinda sealed it.. I'm gettin soft hhppy The toggin was decent.. I had jumped on an open spot at the last minute with NJ Hooker out of PP.. Nice flurry in the am, then kinda slowed.. Capt. worked it hard to keep us on good bottom all day with the tough anchoring conditions.. I got 1 about 8# and another nice keep & some shorts.. a couple guys had limits, everyone had at least a couple for the box.. great day to be out though 4 sure t^ chrz
